Location description from owner

The England region

The Lake District is the perfect place to choose for a holiday location providing both relaxation and action packed adventure holidays. Walkers and climbers are spoiled for choice with some of the highest mountains in England all in a short journey within the National Park, also plenty of forest trails and lakeside paths for those wanting something a bit gentler.

With heritage centers, quaint villages and towns, historic houses and countless outdoor activities, there is something to do year round in the Northern Lake District.

Newlands Valley

The Newlands Valley is a stunning setting for a base for a Lake District holiday with so much on offer right from the door you may not even need the car once you arrive! The walking on offer is second to none, whether you want a relaxing stroll through the peaceful valley, or an all day mountain hike.
Family friendly fells such as Catbells, Causey Pike and Ard Crags are within easy walking distance of the cottage, as are some larger fells such as Robinson, Dale Head and the Coledale group.

Newlands Adventure Center is the ideal destination for people looking for something a little more exhilarating. Situated at Stair just a five minute drive from the cottage, they offer a wide range of activities from ghyll scrambling, climbing, mountain biking, archery and much more. Whinlatter Forest which is also close to the cottage offers a tree top climbing experience called 'Go Ape' and an adventure playground for younger children.

Newlands is also a superb base for cyclists as the pass offers challenging climbs in both directions. There are two exciting loops that can be ridden straight from the door. Set out west towards Buttermere to take on the notorious Honister pass with a steep dramatic climb out of Butteremere Valley then down into the beautiful Borrowdale Valley where you can cycle through the valley along side the lake and return to Newlands via the village of Portinscale.
Alternatively, set out in the opposite direction to take on the Whinlatter Pass which is heavily wooded on the initial uphill before a glorious downhill stretch into the vale of Lorton. This loop takes in Crummock Water before climbing back out of Buttermere Village and over Newlands Pass.

Hungry after a long day on the fells? The Swinside Inn is only a 2 mile drive or a 35 minute walk from High Snab Cottage. This traditional lakeland Inn offers a warm welcome with home cooked food, roaring fires and real ales.

Braithwaite is the nearest village to High Snab Cottage, just a few miles down the quiet valley road. Here you will find two excellent pubs, The Coledale and The Royal Oak, and two hotels, Ivy House and Middle Ruddings, all serving hearty food and local beers. There is a well stocked village shop selling fresh bread and everyday essentials.

Newlands Valley is also well-known for its links with Beatrix Potter; "The Tale of Mrs Tiggywinkle" uses the Newlands Valley as its backdrop and Catbells, Skelgill and Little Town can all be recognised from her sketches.

Keswick is 6 miles from the cottage and is a picturesque town nestled on the shores of Derwent water, the perfect place to spend an afternoon wondering around its array of shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Keswick market is held in the main square every Thursday and Saturday selling a large range of local produce and crafts. The Farmers market is held every Monday selling local meat, cheese, eggs, homemade jams and cakes. It also has two supermarkets, a cinema and award winning theater

“Amazing!!”

Reviewed 13 Jan 2017

From the moment we pulled off the A66 and made our way through the quaint village of Braithwaite, we knew we were heading into some beautiful scenery. Ascending the winding lanes we finally spied High Snab Farm in the distance. We were given a warm welcome by Caroline and the moment we stepped into the holiday cottage we knew we'd stumbled across an absolute gem. The cottage was so cosy and warm and spotless throughout. We could not wish for anything more. Superbly equipped, an extremely comfortable bed and views from the bedroom, lounge and kitchen that one could admire all day long. We'll definitely be back. Thank you Tom and Caroline.

“Amazing place!”

We stayed at the holiday cottage for 3 nights and I have to say it was perfect. The cottage is furnished to a very high standard and was spotless. It was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The location itself was amazing so beautiful and picturesque I can honestly say it's one of the best places I've ever stayed. I would highly recommend this holiday cottage to anyone and it's also very child friendly too. I would love to stay here again in future. Thank you Tom and Caroline.

Excellent cottage. Offered everything I expected and more. Great views and very quiet and relaxing. Decor inside gave it a very modern but country feel. The owners of the cottage were very friendly and welcoming. Log burner was definitely one of the highlights. If you are looking for piece and quiet, somewhere to relax and unwind then this is the place to go. Only 20 minutes away from Keswick town centre. Would definitely go back.

“Fabulous!”

Spent 2 weeks during June/July, and a fantastic 2 weeks it was. The views are stunning. The cottage is well equipped ,and finished to a high standard. Would love to return! Nice to stay on a real working farm, and the host's are most welcoming!
