The Byre is a detached cottage set in the beautiful Newlands Valley between the villages of Braithwaite and Buttermere in the heart of the Northern Fells of the Lake District. About 3 miles from Keswick it is convenient for facilities and yet you can start fabulous walks onto the fells from the front door.
It is spacious, generously furnished and fitted, and offers luxury accommodation for two people. Come home to a log burner in the colder months or a cold drink on the terrace overlooking the wildlife garden in the summer ...
Most visitors are walkers and enjoy the location for it's ease of access to Catbells and Causey Pike ; however also nearby is the specialist Mountain Bike cycling centre of Whinlatter Forest and also the Derwent Water marina in Portinscale where sailing and canoe hire is available. Activities such as Ghyll scrambling and Climbing for all ages can be arranged through the Newlands Activity Centre down the road...

“Spacious cottage in beautiful location”
The photos really don’t do this beautiful and spacious accommodation justice. Everything you need is here (and more besides!). Loved our time here, so relaxing and quiet and never got bored of looking out at the views. Went for so many walks through the stunning valley, down to Derwentwater and up the surrounding fells. David the owner is very friendly and exceptionally helpful. Highly recommended.
“A well-equipped cottage in a wonderful location”
We stayed a week at The Byre and loved every minute! The cottage far exceeded our expectations - it was spacious and warm, with the most amazing views from the lounge. It was tastefully decorated and well equipped with a comfortable bed - a must! It was a treat to be able to sit outside on the patio and enjoy the beautiful Newlands Valley, plus being able to hear the cuckoo calling. There were several walks from the cottage to Lake Derwentwater and the hills outside the cottage, and it wasn't far to drive to Keswick. We'd love to come back again!
“A spacious property in a stunning location.”
This cottage has superb space for a two person holiday. Living room has huge patio doors all along one wall looking straight out to Cat Bells, views from the kitchen and bedroom of Skiddaw. The kitchen is well equipped with lots of work surface. The whole place is bright and airy and built and decorated to a high standard. The friendly owner is on site for any queries. The only downside is the narrow road up from the village, although there are many passing places. A perfect setting for a walking holiday in the northern lakes.
“Excellent in many ways”
The cottage is probably the best we have stayed in. It has loads of space, is well furnished & very clean. There are great views & walks direct from the cottage with lots of wildlife literally on the doorstep. Many thanks to David for making us welcome & providing local advice when we asked for it.
We stayed here for three nights at the end of February, however now we wish it had been for longer! The palace is just so amazing. The weather wasn't great, it rained most of the time but the property is in such a great location it meant we could get out when we could, and be in comfort when we got in, and have plenty to do and enjoy whilst being inside, we almost didn't want to leave the building!!!the pictures do not do the place justice, and the owner is very willing to help if you need anything which is nice to know. There isn't a bad thing to say about this place. We will definitely be coming back, we had a lovely time, thank you!
“Super cottage in a fantastic location”
The Byre is a delightful cottage in an excellent location just outside of Keswick. The walking from the door is superb and the views are amazing. The cottage is in immaculate condition and well equipped. We would highly recommend a visit.
“Wonderful Cottage - much needed holiday!!”
We stayed in the Byre for 4 days in January and couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our holiday. We arrived to a warm welcome, with tea and cake laid out for us. The cottage was very spacious, clean and beautifully presented, with everything you could possibly need for a short break. Despite sub zero temperatures every night, we were kept snug and warm with the log burning fire. The views of the fells from the living room windows are breath taking, as the pictures show! Very highly recommended - the perfect place to stay when visiting the beautiful lake district. It was our first time in the Byre, and we were reluctant to leave, but we'll hopefully be back soon!

If you have a vision of the perfect remote location to relax and enjoy gorgeous landscapes, this is your place. We arrived at dark so did not gain the full picture until arising the next morning. It was breath taking as we sipped our tea. It is really hard to describe the perfection of this "cottage" ( I put this in quotes, as it is far more than a cottage). The location though remote, is quite convenient to Keswick and points beyond. If you love to cook, the kitchen was delightful and we produced some pretty great creations. As our kitchen creations were simmering, we sipped great wine by the wood stove that was quite inviting. The Byre will always be our choice when visiting Cumbria!!! “LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!”
Unbelievable property, huge with fantastic views towards Catbells. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, we loved the peace and quiet amongst stunning scenery but with all the facilities of Keswick nearby. The photos don't do the Byre justice! We will definitely return and would recommend.
“Fantastic location and a property with the Wow factor”
This is a one bedroomed property and when my partner and I arrived we were expecting one bedroom sized proportions. Imagine our surprise when we went in and found that the property was like the Tardis. Every room was larger than we expected with good quality fixtures and fittings. The complimentary cake and tea/coffee with milk is a nice touch if you have travelled a long way and not been able to get to the shops before arriving. The kitchen has everything you are likely to need and plenty of it. The property is tastefully furnished, you get a sofa each! and the view over to Catbells through the full length windows is fantastic. You also get to see a vast number of different birds feeding off the bird table, take binoculars and a book to identify them. We had a great, relaxing and refreshing stay not least in part due to the quality of the accommodation and I am sure that we will be back. It was our first time but a sure sign that a property is doing things right is to check the visitors book, there were couples who had been six or seven times. The TV reception didn't work to well in the kitchen and we didn't try the one in the bedroom but I know you don't go to the Lakes to watch telly. The info book could probably do with updating as some of the appliances had been replaced and the photos of this property definitely do not do it justice. These are minor quibbles really and we would certainly recommend this property if you want to get away from it all for a relaxing break in the country.
