The County Down region

We consider ourselves very fortunate to own a holiday house in Co Down. This county has so much to offer:

NATURAL SCENERY GALORE - from mountains to blue flag beaches and forest parks, fields and rivers and lakes all within easy distance of each other!

HISTORY - we are steeped in history - from St Patrick's trail and cathedrals and monastic sites to castles, dolmens, a windmill (Ballycopeland), museums and National Trust Properties.

ACTIVITIES - too many to list them all. Mountain sports, water sports, fishing etc, cycling, archery, golf/ putting, swan pedal boats, children's play parks, equestrian, rambling...

SHOPPING - we are close enough to Belfast and Newry to benefit from designer shops.

CULTURE - everything from pub nights and Irish music to oyster festivals art galleries and plays; also Belfast Waterfront Hall and Grand Opera house are only 20 miles away.

FOOD - as in most areas now food places range from Mitchelin starred restaurants (Holywood and Newry) to fast food places such as McDonalds and KFC. So something to suit all. Newcastle is lucky to enjoy a good choice of eateries.

GOLF - it has to be remembered that the Royal County Down Golf Club - within 3 miles of our house, is considered the best course in the world outside of USA.

To give you an idea of distances - the Giant's Causeway up north in Co Antrim is just over 2 hours drive away.

Newcastle, Castlewellan and the Mourne area generally, lends itself to a host of outdoor activities for all ages, however, with such beautiful scenery to walk or drive through, it can also be a joy to relax in.

Percy French immortalised this area in his song - the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea!

Tollymore Park across the road from us is highly recommended. Children can enjoy rolling down hills , climbing trees, jumping over stepping stones across rivers. There is also a children's play area within the fenced picnic area. Many specimen trees can be found in the arboretum. Those who are interested may also wish to look for Game of Throne locations.

Try not to get lost in the maze in Castlewellan Forest Park - I still need to be guided from the viewpoint!!.

If you want an interesting pony trek Mount Pleasant Horse Trekking Centre is on the outskirts of Castlewellan.

Teenagers may enjoy mountain boarding at Surfin Dirt not too far down the road from us, or the indoor climbing wall at Hotrock - part of the Tollymore National Outdoor centre - within walking distance of our house.

Life Adventure Centre in Castlewellan Forest Park - organises many activities - archery/ kayaking & more.

Newcastle public library must surely have the best view of any.

The very popular Mauds cafe offers great light meals with a view and Pooh Bear ice-cream.. The Cookie Jar has great home made broth and wheaten bread.

My list could go on and on. I have an information pack in the house with a sample of local activities / events / places to go. Visit Newcastle Visitor Information Centre for lots more..

"Beautiful family home in a wonderful location"

We travelled to the Jays with a 4 year old, Mum and Grandparents. It exceeded our expectations! It can be difficult to find properties to suit 'extended family' groups. The Jays is excellent in this regard. The double room has an en-suite on the ground floor and the family bathroom is on the first floor with the other bedrooms and the living room. This meant we all had plenty of space and privacy as well as a spacious living room and kitchen for when we all wanted to be together. The house itself is exceptionally clean and well appointed. The furnishings, crockery etc are both plentiful and of good quality. The house is in a lovely location, it is quiet and the back garden, while small, was lovely to sit out in while the weather was good and for the little one to play in. The Tollymore Forest Park is literally across the road. We went there every day to play football, walk and explore the forest. We even saw a red squirrel! Newcastle is a great town for family holidaysand is ony a couple of miles away, the beach is fun, cafes and amusements abound! We also took a day trip to the Giants Causeway, which is a 2 hour drive but well worth it! All in all, we all loved 'The Jays' and hope to return.

"A great place to stay"

My Mother Sister and stayed at the Jay's for four nights May 2013 and had a thoroughly enjoyable if too short a stay. the weather was poor so we had more time to enjoy this beautifully appionted home. The first floor lounge is a refreshing change from the norm being both comfortable and easy to keep cleen, being on the first floor gave a better view of the mourne mountains, the televison and DVD player worked well on those wet days. The Kitchen is well appointed with full instructions for all the apliances. We all agreed that would be happy to return to the Jays hopefully next year.

"Home from Home!"

Me, my husband, my parents and our 2 year old stayed at the Jays for 3 nights. Lovely house which was spacious, clean & cosy. Fresh flowers, wood for the fire, toys & all the small things were there which Judy thought of:) Great location. Close to Newcastle town, Tolleymore pk & other sight seeing places. Judy has folders for everything with alot of information which was handy. Would stay again if I was ever in the Co.Down area, great house :)
