Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Edinburgh and the Lothians is a region of iconic landmarks, world-famous festivals and excellent attractions. From castles, distilleries, museums and art galleries to beautiful beaches, country parks and the famous Edinburgh Zoo, there really is something for everyone and every age group.

Edinburgh plays host to a number of fantastic festivals all year round but it is the world famous Edinburgh Festival and Fringe, the largest arts event in the world that attracts most travellers. During August, visitors come from all over the world to see the spectacular Edinburgh Military Tattoo, set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

If it's culture you desire, visit the many fabulous exhibitions, museums and historic landmarks. Enjoy a stroll around Edinburgh Castle, a trip to the Sottish Parliament or visit Holyrood Palace, the Queen's official residence in Scotland. See T-Rex at the National Museum of Scotland, Concorde at the National Museum of Flight and Steiff Bears at the world's only dedicated Museum of Childhood.

And when you're ready to unwind, relax and refuel, chose from an extensive choice of restaurants, bars and trendy cafes. From Michelin starred restaurants, historic pubs to quiet backstreet cafes, Edinburgh has something to suit everyone and every budget.

If you have more time in the area you could venture further afield and visit St Andrews, Glasgow or beautiful Perthshire. The excellent train and bus networks mean that you really can explore Scotland quickly and conveniently.

New Town

North Castle Street lies right in the heart of the New Town. The apartment is in walking distance of most of Edinburgh's main attractions. George Street is a one minute walk away with its fantastic bars, restaurants and stylish shops. You can also take a bus from here to most areas in Edinburgh. Take a trip down to Leith to see the Royal Yacht Britannia which is docked here. Trips on board are held daily.

Edinburgh Castle can be seen clearly from the windows of the apartment and is about a 20 minute stroll through the fabulous old town and up the Royal Mile. However, with so much to see and do along the way, it may take much longer!

The lovely Princes Street gardens set against the backdrop of the Castle are just a three minute walk away and offer a peaceful setting to relax and unwind - as well a providing a safe place for children to "let off steam"! (there is a good children's play park at "our" end of the gardens - an easy 5 minute walk). At Christmas time, the gardens provide a magical setting for the seasons attractions including a purpose built outdoor ice rink. Princes Street is also the setting for the world famous Hogmanay Celebrations with its spectacular fireworks, but if you want to avoid the crowd, pull up a chair and watch from the comfort of North Castle Street.

This really is the most perfect setting from which to explore all that Edinburgh has to offer.

“Warm welcome to perfect apartment, highly recomended”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2016

This was a fabulous apartment in a perfect location, The owners couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful to ensure that we enjoyed our stay in Edinburgh

“Fantastic property in a great location for a fair price with brilliant customer care.”

Reviewed 4 Sep 2013

We very much enjoyed our fifth visit to Edinburgh. This property is really well located almost in the heart of the City but pleasingly quiet too. Lots of bars, restaurants and shops nearby and buses, taxis and trains galore within easy striking distance. The park a few hundred yards away is beautiful. There's a few stairs to negotiate but nothing that taxed our septuagenarian travelling buddies! Inside the decor and layout is great and everything required to 'stay in' if you choose is there too. Helen's personal touches are evident and welcome both in things like the welcome pack itself and also how the booking was managed. I suspect we'll be back - great holiday.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for your review. We are delighted you enjoyed the apartment and we would love to welcome you back in the future.

“Great host, great apartment, great location”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2013

North Castle Street apartment is well located within easy walking distance of Edinburgh's tourist sights and restaurants. Convenience stores (for some food and sundries) are within walking distance but if you plan on cooking-in and need a good grocery store a car, cab or public transit is required. The apartment has four, full flights of stairs but is exactly as advertised. Unlike a lot of tiny European stairwells, North Castle Street's stairwell is large, well-lit and wide....no trouble getting up with suitcases or groceries. You do need to be moderately fit and leave a little energy from sightseeing for making the trek up the stairs at the end of a day. The apartment is worth the trek. It is spacious, comfortably decorated and well appointed. There is a lot of spreading out room between the large eat-in kitchen and the living room. The photos don't do it justice. It is larger and homier that it looks on-line. Cooking at home was a delight. The kitchen is stocked with every tool and appliance you might need. The welcome basket was stocked full of delights that we munched on throughout our ten day stay. We were five adults...and used all three bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom looks like it might be tight in the photos but it is plenty big enough that you don't bang your head the way you think you might. The two bathrooms were a great plus for our size group. Surprisingly, we stayed in Edinburgh during a heat wave! We found that the apartment had plenty of windows on the main floor and skylights on the upper floor to let the lovely breezes flow in and whisk away the heat. If Edinburgh is your main travel focus...you really don't need a car while staying at North Castle Street. We, however, had obligations outside of Edinburgh and needed two cars. The off-street parking is superb but because there is only one clicker to open the gate and the spaces are in tandem...you will need to coordinate the timing of your comings and goings. While we were five adults it is obvious that North Castle Street welcomes families with children. Many of Helen's recommendations are kid-friendly from restaurants to sightseeing. We benefited from two of her restaurant recommendations and enjoyed our favorite lunch and favorite take-away dinner based on what she advised. Everything, including wi-fi and TV, worked perfectly throughout our stay. Finally, working with Helen on all the details of our stay was fantastic. My only regret: I wish she had a way to accept credit card payments directly instead of going through PayPal (which is a very expensive way to deal with international transactions). Helen is very responsive via e-mail. She met us at the door on the day of our arrival. She was very prompt in returning our security deposit. Her attention to details (like the welcome basket, written recommendations for where to eat and what to see as well as how she outfitted the kitchen) made our stay at the North Castle Street apartment the best overall rental experience we had in the UK (we were in the UK five-plus weeks and rented a total of 5 self-catering houses/apartments). North Castle Street was the best of five rentals and I give it an overall 5.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review, it was a pleasure to welcome you to our apartment and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Just to be clear for our future guests, the apartment is on the top floor of a 3 storey apartment building, so there are actually 3 flights of stairs, not 4. There are stairs in the apartment but this is because it is a double upper. Being at the top affords us the fabulous views we enjoy across Edinburgh. Using paypal allows our guests to make credit card payments from all over the world. Whilst there are transaction charges for international payments, there are no charges for payments made in the UK. This is a secure and safe way of taking credit card payments. As owners we do have to pay for each transaction but this is not passed on to our guests. We do also accept direct payments.

“Outstanding flat”

Reviewed 1 Aug 2013

The flat is right in the centre of things, but still quiet. It was extremely comfortable, with an excellent welcome pack. The owners had gone out of their way to make life easy for us, setting up a cot and high chair for our son (who also loved the bucket full of toy cars he found in his bedroom) and leaving milk and other essentials in the fridge. We would definitely book it again.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind review - it was a pleasure to welcome you and your family to our apartment and I'm glad your little boy liked the toy cars. We hope you are able to visit us some time again in the future.

“Wonderful stay at N. Castle Street”

Reviewed 7 Jun 2013

We all enjoyed spending four nights at the N. Castle Street flat. Our group included four adults and three children (aged 8-12) and we found the flat to be very spacious and beautifully appointed. The owner was very welcoming and helpful with all of our questions and we all appreciated the generous welcome basket! The location of the flat was perfect for walking to all the desirable locations of Edinburgh, we were able to see everything in the city without ever using a bus or taxi. Be aware that the flat is on the top floor (affording stunning views of the castle) so if you're adverse to stair climbing this may be a deterrent. In summary, we all enjoyed the flat and would definitely stay at N. Castle Street again if we travel back to Edinburgh.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your very kind review. we would be delighted to have you as our guests again in the future. I'm really glad you enjoyed the apartment and had a wonderful stay in Edinburgh.

“Perfect in every way.”

Reviewed 12 May 2013

My American wife and I had family visiting from across the pond and we decided to take a 4 day trip to Edinburgh. When looking for somewhere to stay, we had very specific requirements; we wanted somewhere of good quality, centrally located yet relatively quiet that wasn't crawling with loud clubbers on an evening. North Castle Street ticked all those boxes perfectly for us (the flat is absolutely superb), however, it was the extra touches provided by Helen that truly exceeded our expectations and ensured our time in the apartment was most memorable. For example, the lovely gift basket (which included a yummy bottle of champagne!) and hugely informative guides to the city that greeted us on arrival were highly impressive. We tried 2 of the recommended restaurants, Gusto and Strada, both were delicious! A big thank you to Helen from all of us, we will be back in the future! Nathan, Tiffany and family.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind review, it was a pleasure to welcome you all and I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We would love to have you back.

“A Capital Property”

Reviewed 21 Feb 2013

It was critical that this weekend was as special as it could be “a significant birthday” surprise for my wife. Children and partners gathering together for a well planned break, the only concern was where to stay that would allow a relaxed atmosphere with no pressures. North Castle Street ticks all the boxes, the perfect house in a perfect location. It’s the little things that make the difference. Helen the owner met us at the apartment and welcomed us into what can only be described as a luxurious home. I have stayed in some 5 star hotels that don’t reach this standard. The welcome basket in the kitchen was a lovely touch that saved us being faced with the prospect of immediately having to go shopping. The only problem we faced was that everything was so perfect we hated going out. However being in the centre of everything but far enough of the main thoroughfare to be quiet made life easy. We will certainly return again.

Owner's reply: Thank you for such a kind review. It was a pleasure to welcome you and your family on your wife's special birthday. I'm so glad that our apartment fitted the bill. We would love to welcome you back again.

Party of 6 ladies from 18 to 60ish!..........excellent welcome pack on arrival- virtually everything thought of to cater for us all. Accommodation of a very high standard, spotlessly clean and still providing a homely feeling.Fantastic views of Edinburgh. Excellent location for exploring Edinburgh, very central and convenient. Couldn't recommend this highly enough. Great time.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind review and it was a pleasure to accommodate you all. We are so pleased you enjoyed the apartment and hope you choose to visit us again in the future.

“Perfect Place”

Reviewed 23 Jan 2013

Went to Edinburgh with 4 friends and stayed in this apartment. The apartment was like 'a home from home' and we were made to feel at home from the first step into the property. The apartment had plenty of space, very clean and the best location to allow us too carry out many activates we had planed, from shopping, pubs, sight seeing etc. We never had to worry about running out of anything while staying here, plenty of clean towels for all 5 of us and a local co-op less then 1 minute walk from apartment. I would recommend this apartment to anybody wishing to have an apartment to stay in. Thanks again :)

Owner's reply: Really glad you all enjoyed your stay and we would love to welcome you again next year.

“Absolutely gorgeous!!! Highly recommended!”

Reviewed 22 Jan 2013

We stayed here for my sisters hen do. On arrival we were greeted by the owner is was really lovely and showed us around explaining where everything was and how everything works etc! Throughout my booking she was on hand to answer any questions and literally couldn't do enough for us. There was even a welcome basket with all the essentials in which made it very easy to settle right in with a nice cuppa and a biscuit. The apartment is absolutely gorgeous I would even say better than the photos!! We didn't tell my sister where we were staying and when she looked around she even cried it was so nice! Each bedroom is lovely with plenty of storage, the kitchen is well equipped with everything you could need for a home cooking and the living room is very spacious, comfortable and the fire made it very warm and cosy especially in the winter! The apartment is in a fabulous location, it's right near the bars, restaurants and shopping so it's not far to walk back if you got lots of bags or just need to get home after a night out in heels!!! Me and my friend all agreed that the apartment was brilliant. I would definitely stay here again and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh. Thanks for everything Helen

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review. I was delighted to see how pleased your sister was with her surprise and how much you all enjoyed the apartment. We would love to welcome you again in the future.
