The Cyclades region
Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades and mostly self sufficient with its agricultural history, has a stunning mountain range with beautiful unspoilt villages which are like splashes of white amongst the landscape and where the local people welcome visitors as they do their family. Sample their fabulous cuisine, local wine and enjoy the hospitality. It is like a time gone by.
Our beaches are boasted to be some of the best in Greece with endless miles of white sand and turquoise clear water, totally safe for swimming and at the south of the island some secluded bays that are virtually undiscovered.
The climate here is one of the best in the southern Mediterranean area with virtually uninterrupted sunshine from the middle of May till the middle of October, with temperatures averaging 30 degress celcius in the Summer. As we are an island, there is generally a breeze that keeps the climate manageable and our days are long and glorious.
The history of the island is varied with Byzantine,Venetian and Greek infuences, all still greatly evident and there are many monuments and churches in evidence. The Kastro area of our town,Chora, the Venetian quarter is an incredible display of architecture, alleyways and a past era.
People have dwelt in Naxos since 4000BC and on arrival to this beautiful island by boat, the first visual you see is the Portara, the doorway to the ancient temple of Apollo, which was built circa 500 BC and never finished.
Rising above the main town of Chora is the Venetian Kastro, built in 1200 and the governing seat in the Cyclades for 300 years.
Within the perimeter of the castle there are a number of Venetian residences,a 13th century Catholic Cathedral and the French school where Nikos Karantzakis ,the renowned Greek writer studied. Zorba the Greek and the Last Temptation of Christ are among his most renowned works. The building is now an Archaeological museum displaying many examples of marble and ceramics.
The Bourgos area, where the Greeks lived when the town was under Venetian control,is full of winding streets with many shops and restaurants to choose from.
Mouthwatering tavernas, intimate bars and ouzerias, fabulous shops and of course the port and delightful fishing harbour, with a marina for the larger boats, offering daily excursions to neighbouring islands. You can while the day away just watching!
A short distance south from the town and you have the amazing beaches of Plaka,Orkos and Mikri Vigla with their white sand and crystal clear water, totally safe for swimming.
These beaches offer a variety of water sports, including kite and windsurfing , a spectacular sight in the sky on a day with ideal conditions.
There is a local mini market and bakery with fresh bread daily and some of the most inviting tavernas, with their delightful cuisine and welcoming hospitality.
