The Cyclades region
The beaches in the south west of the island are amongst the sandiest and most beautiful in the Greek islands. The water is shallow and safe for bathing when it is not too windy, but there are plenty of opportunities -once you have had a few lessons in town to wind or kite surf.
There are a few tavernas near the beach but the long sandy beach is backed by dunes where a rare slow growing cedar grows. This are is protected and is a world heritage site.
You have no need for beach facilities if you stay at Ecalpemos because you are only 2-3 minutes away, however a coll box is available to take coll drinks to the beach.
There is much to explore in this region -the incomplete holiday village started by the Military Jundta in the late 60s but never finished, swim with turtles of the coast of Alyko and within 20 minutes you are in the fertile Tragea and able to visit the beatiful villages of Chailki and Filoti. You are only 20 -25 minutes by car from Naxos town, 4 hours by foot, plus there is a bus service.
This land is mainly owned by the people from Filoti -the largest village on the island. With Greek inheritance laws the sons inherited the fertile inland farms while the girls got the coastal less fertile region! Over the last 5 years there has been a growth in building holiday homes but it does not detract from the peace and natural beauty of this area.
I the high season there are 4 to 5 excellent tavernas within walking distance. An excellent bakery all year round 5 minutes by car and a number of mini-markets who would be happy to deliver to you.

"A perfect holiday place !"
The location of the Villa Ecalpemos would be very hard to beat ! Away from the crowds, on the south west side of the island, the villa faces directly onto a perfect unspoiled beach, which is just a few yards away from the garden. Would recommend a car so that you can really explore the wonderful island of Naxos, but there are a couple of tavernas within walking distance. The villa itself is well appointed, and there is a great outdoor kitchen area with fantastic BBQ on the terrace. For me, best of all are the terraces - the upper one a great place for breakfast overlooking the beach, so quiet in the mornings, just the sound of birdsong...And in the evening what could be better than watching the sun set over the neighbouring island of Paros, with a glass of ouzo in hand ! Naxos is a great island to visit as its not just a tourist destination, like so many other Greek islands, but a island lived and worked in by Greek people. We visited at Easter ( later than UK Easter last year) and were genuinely touched by the welcome we received. You will not be disappointed !
