The Occitanie region

The Languedoc region of France is so varied, it would take you many holidays to be able to appreciate its different attractions. Here's a few suggestions:

- Relax on the long, sandy beach of Narbonne Plage then lunch on moules and frites
- Visit the superbly restored Abbey de Fontfroide
- Sample the 'plat du jour' & a carafe of rose at any restaurant at lunchtime for excellent value
- Stroll along the Canal de la Robine under the plane trees
- Visit the walled city of Carcassonne, the ruins of the Chateau de Queribus and Peyrepetuse
- Walk on the exposed section of the oldest Roman road in Gaul (Hotel de Ville, Narbonne) built over eight centuries.
- Spend an evening watching the world go by at the marina in Gruissan
- Swim in the lake at Roquebrune
- Visit the village of Le Somail and cross the ancient bridge over the Canal du Midi.

Narbonne

Large areas of vineyards with big buildings, the wine-making Domaines of old, feature in this landscape as well as
the black mountains of the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is an area for migrating birds and large birds of prey. In the near distance the Canal de la Robine is defined by parallel rows of plane trees.

The former Archbishop's Palace of Narbonne is visible on the skyline. Also in Narbonne is the prize winning covered food market of Les Halles and twice a week a general market selling fabric, pottery, clothes, handbags, jewellery etc

The centre of Narbonne has recently been remodelled and you can stroll by the side of the canal or sit on the steps. Many restaurants border the canal where you can eat 'al fresco'.

There is an olympic swimming pool and an ice rink and you can also visit the museum of Charles Trenet, writer and singer of the classic 'La Mer' song - currently on U tube.

“Fantastic location, beautiful area”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2014

The Winery apartment had everything we needed for our week long stay. The pool was lovely and perfect after a bust day out and about. The location of the apartment was the main plus point for us; just 10 minutes from a large supermarket and the centre of Narbonne, 20 minutes from the beach but also right next to the Canal du Midi which was lovely for an afternoon/evening walk. Car hire is a must but allows you to visit many of the beautiful castles and towns around. The setting is very quiet and rural so you need to be prepared to deal with the various wildlife you encounter as a result. The only real drawback to our stay was a lack of air conditioning. Most of the time this wasn't a problem due to the very high ceilings and huge windows but at night it was too warm to be comfortable. Even so, we hope to go back there soon. Jill is a very helpful and attentive owner.
