If you are looking for a character away-from-it-all place to stay, then The Birdhouse is it! It has been built from scratch yet looks as though it has been in place for hundreds of years. It has recently been awarded a four star rating.

Surrounded by countryside in the rural hamlet of Bourton you would be forgiven for thinking you were in The Cotswolds because of the stone cottages and small river which meanders along the side of the lane. Location description from owner

The England region

'The nearest earthly place to paradise' is how Wodehouse describes Shropshire. It is a county with hidden secrets and much to offer; beautiful scenery with a multitude of walking opportunities or towns such as Much Wenlock, Shrewsbury and Ludlow with ancient buildings.

Ludlow has a castle, a stone's throw from the old market square. It is also renowned as the gastronomical capital of Shropshire for its eateries.

Bridgnorth has a view across the river Severn which Charles the first described as being the finest view in all his kingdom. Bridgnorth is divided into high town and low town and a funicular railway links them both. An atmospheric ride on a steam train can be taken on The Severn Railway which runs along a scenic route from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster.

Ironbridge has the world's first iron bridge spanning the river Severn. It was here that the Industrial Revolution was started. Today you can visit any of the ten Ironbridge museums: Step back in time, at Blists Hill Victorian Town, view the china at Coalport or visit the Tile museum on the other side of the river at Jackfield.

A different type of museum is to be found at Acton Scott Historic Farm where all the old methods are employed and the land is worked with Shire horses.

Much Wenlock

Bourton is an unpretentious rural hamlet of great charm and character, through which runs the upper reaches of the river Corve. It lies three miles to the south west of Much Wenlock, a town of historic interest with Medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings and a wonderful selection of small shops. It is famous as the birthplace of the modern Olympic games, which continue to be held locally.

Bourton is just a short walk from Wenlock Edge, a fossilated limestone escarpment offering outstanding views. It runs for miles and has sheer drops in places. Running along the lower reaches of the ridge is a disused railway track, which is used by horse riders and walkers. The whole area is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

“So very relaxing & comfortable”

Reviewed 22 Oct 2015

We stayed at the Birdhouse for a long weekend and can honestly say that I have never felt so relaxed and comfortable in a holiday property. The Birdhouse was extremely clean and tidy and the owners, Louise & Norman very welcoming and helpful. The property has everything you could ever need, especially a very good quality comfortable bed. Would love to return at some point and am quite sure we will. Thank you.

“Fantastic place to stay, couldn't be better.”

The Birdhouse has everything needed for a holiday home. Set on the edge of a quiet village just off Wenlock Edge it is an ideal base for the Shropshire Hills AONB, Much Wenlock, Ironbridge and the whole beautiful area The Birdcage sits in. I usually find something to fix in the cottages I stay at but here Norman keeps everything in full and proper working order. Louise has equipt the cottage with everything I required for using as a home from home. Fast Internet access via WiFi was a big bonus for me. I visited the area for model glider flying on the Long Mynd and to do some carp fishing. There are some small lakes nearby with a bigger one at New House Farm, Church Stretton (52.546064, -2.793101) next to the Longmynd Archery Club.

“A little Gem of a find!!”

A gorgeous little upper barn conversion. Totally private. Shared garden with owners, but they have their own little private space, so not an issue. Owners extremely helpful as regards to nearest towns, where to eat and where to visit. Had (Sunday) lunch at their recommendation at the Royal Oak, Cardington and we were not disappointed. I was mortified that I broke a wine glass my first evening there, but no problem. Tea bags, coffee, sugar, a pint of milk, mini jams, packet of biscuits, kitchen towel, tin foil, cleaning materials, etc. all provided for our 3 night stay. Loved it!
