The Zululand region
KZN has three different geographic areas. The lowland region along the Indian Ocean coast is extremely narrow in the south, widening in the northern part of the province. The central region is the Natal Midlands and is an undulating hilly plateau rising towards the west. Two mountainous areas, the Drakensberg Mountains in the west and the Lebombo Mountains in the north. KZN has a varied yet verdant climate thanks to diverse, complex topography. Generally, the coast is subtropical with inland regions becoming progressively colder. Durban on the south coast has daytime maxima peaking temperatures from January to March at 28 °C (82 °F) with a minimum of 21 °C (70 °F), dropping to daytime highs from June to August of 23 °C (73 °F) with a minimum of 11 °C (52 °F). The Zululand north coast has the warmest climate and highest humidity with many sugar cane farms around Pongola.
Mtunzini is the Zulu word for 'Place in the Shade', which originated from the time when a white trade hunter, named John Dunne (who served as chieftain under the Zulu king Cetswayo), had his Indaba (hold discussions) under the big Milkwood trees adjacent to the Umlalazi lagoon. Historical sites dating back to these turbid times lend a mystical aura to this unspoilt area of Northern Natal. The village of Mtunzini was originally developed in about 1895 comprising mostly of the Magistrates Court, prison and station. Mtunzini's functions are mainly as a residential town, holiday resort and administrative centre for the Mtunzini magisterial area. Its residents are mostly from the neighbouring points of Empangeni / Richards Bay / Isithebe and the Zululand University. The farmers from the surrounding cane farms are also an important group of the community. Mtunzini is on the direct route to the North on the N2 highway between Durban and Empangeni, and is also within easy driving distance from most of Natal's well-known game reserves (wildparks), golf courses, beaches and tourist attractions.
