Location description from owner

The Pays de la Loire region

The Loire is known as the 'Garden of France' thanks to its temperate climate and abundant local produce. Saumur, approx 20 minutes away is a famous chteau town with spectacular river views, boutiques, restaurants, theatre, bars and historic buildings, as well as a superb market on Saturdays selling local cheeses and fresh vegetables.

Saumur is also home to the national French riding school and the French cavalry who put on spectacular dressage shows throughout the year, for nearly two centuries the cavaliers of the Cadre Noir have been the pride of this city. Major international competitions, of all equestrian pursuits, are regular occurrences in this wonderful place.

The Chateau of Saumur ,15th century home of the Anjou kings, dominates Saumur (from its hilltop setting it really is a fairytale Chateau) Begun by Louis XI in 1246, it is a rare example of 14th century architecture, a style that evolved at the end of the Middle Ages and ushered in the Renaissance.

Angers
The Maine river flows peacefully at the foot of the imposing Chateau d'Angers, which, together with the towering Cathedral, is the centre of the Old Town and its half-timbered houses. The world most popular liqueur, Cointreau, is produced in Angers. Moreover, Anjou boasts a great number of wine producers offering wine tasting of the delightfully diverse local production.

There are lovely walking streets filled with bistros and boutiques. On a Saturday morning there are markets where you will find everything from local cheeses and all sorts of local delicacies to sample there are items to buy from Parisian shoes , handbags, clothes stunning and artwork. Why not mix country life with chic cities, whilest mingleing with the locals.

Baug
In the 15th century, Baug was the favourite residence of Yolande of Aragon, mother of the future King Ren, who also liked to hold court here. The Chteau of Baug, which has an elegant spiral staircase, now houses a museum (featuring china, weapons and old coins) Also on display is the famous Cross of Anjou, a precious relic brought from Constantinople in the 13th century.

Fontevraud
Extending over nearly 37 acres, Fontevraud is the largest group of monastic buildings anywhere in Europe.
Of the five abbeys founded in the 11th century, only three still exist. The English Plantagenet Kings chose Fontevraud as their final resting place and the recumbent figures of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionhearted and Isabel of Angoulme can be admired in Abbey Church.

Mouliherne

We also have in the region the zoo at Doué La Fontaine and La Fleche , there are also 140 boules clubs in the area for those who want to be with the locals.

The rivers, lakes and forests accommodate those with outdoor interests. There are a wide range of watersports such as fishing, sailing, canoeing and swimming. There are also plenty of paths for cycling, walking and horse riding.

We have at least six first class golf courses in our area.

There are public swimming pools at Longué Le Lude and Saumur where there is also a beach. There are plenty of local lakes for fishing (easy to get a permit in the local tabac) also for swimming, many of which have sandy beaches.

“Peaceful and lovely place to relax and explore the Valley”

Reviewed 18 Apr 2013

Tastefully decorated lovely cottage to stay exactly as described by the owners who are very nice and helpful. Very good location, although we couldn't find the place at first and the owner helped us with direction. Surrounded by vineyards, It takes only 15-20 minutes to reach Saumur where plenty of activities are available for both adults and children, shopping centre with supermarket, also from there you can start travelling along river Loire and visit Castles. We stayed for 3-4 days and would love to return and stay longer - so much to see!

Thank you for staying with us, it was a pleasure It would be nice for you to return and catch up on all the exciting things you missed.
