Location description from owner

The England region

Cumbria is situated in the North West corner of England. It is England's third largest county but it is one of its least densely crowded with a population under 500,000. It is visited by over 15 million people per year attracted by the scenic splendour of its natural and built landscape. Only 5 towns and the city of Carlisle have a population above 15000 so there is space here for crowds and for those seeking quiet time to enjoy nature.

With all of England's mountains over 3000ft and its 4 largest natural lakes, the Lake District is the main target for visitors but Cumbria has other treasures with the lovely Eden valley flowing into the magical Solway in the North, the North Pennines AONB in the East and part of the Dales National Park in the South East.

Walkers and climbers, cyclists and horse riders, canoeists and sailors can all explore wild places impossible to reach by car but others can enjoy a quiet stroll by a sparkling stream, a picnic amongst the heather or a trip on a steamer.

The landscape and life of Cumbria continue to inspire new generations of poets, writers, artists, sculptors and photographers just as it did William Wordsworth, John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter.

Historians will find numerous sites of interest such as the Castlerigg Stone CIrcle, the Western half of Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle Cathedral and Shap Abbey, medieval castles and fortified farms known as bastles.

The locals are independent, proud of their home county and difficult to impress, but they provide a welcome second to none in the traditional pubs and renowned restaurants. Local produce of the highest standard can be found in butchers, fishmongers and markets throughout the county.

Morland

Kings Meaburn lies within the Eden District of Cumbria, which covers most of the Eastern part of the county and is named after the River Eden, which flows from the Yorkshire border in the South carving a majestic route to the sea in the Solway Firth in the very North of the county. On either side are scattered villages of great charm connected by a network of quiet lanes and rights of way. Only a few miles from the bustle of the Lake District this beautiful land provides a peaceful setting for a relaxing break amidst sparkling rivers, ancient woodlands and heather clad moors. Never far away are the fells of the Lake District in the West and the high Pennines in the West and no better place to view them than from the summit Cafe of Hartside Pass on the Penrith Alston Road.

KIngs Meaburn is just 9 miles from Penrith, the main town and shopping centre in Eden. Access to the Lake District is easy with the Pooley Bridge pier for the Ullswater steamers just 13 miles away and Haweswater (home to England's only Golden Eagle) just 11 miles. Nearest small town for shopping is Appleby at 5 miles which hosts the famous Horse Fair each June.

Kings Meaburn is situated above the West bank of the River Lyvennet which flows north through beautiful woodland and meadows to join the Eden. The White Horse pub in the village is popular with our guests for meals and hosts the Eden Valley Beer Festival each July. Other popular places to eat are the Mill Yard Cafe in Morland with access to Morland Hall gardens and the community owned Butchers Arms in Crosby Ravensworth. Orton is close by with its Chocolate Factory and excellent Farmers' Market on the second Saturday of each month.

Croft Barn is a great location for visitors to Lowther Castle, Lakeland Birds of Prey Centre, Rheged Centre, Total Warrior events at Shap. Appleby railway station is on the Settle to Carlisle line which provides a scenic day out.
