Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

The combination of the words “Charente” and “Maritime” help to capture the magic of this region which produces the best from the land with the Cognac grapes, cereal crops and fields of sunflowers as well as the best from the ocean with the incredible selection of seafood available throughout the region. The Charente Maritime is the most centrally located region in France with the Atlantic and its 150 mile coastline to the west, the Loire, Vendee and Deux-Sevres to the north as well as Bordeaux, the Dordogne and the Gironde to the south. The chateaux, wineries and rolling countryside in these regions are just some of the attractions within easy reach. Known locally as the “Western Mediterranean” the Charente-Martime region is second only to Provence as the sunniest region in France, with its long hot summers and warm sunny springs and autumns, make it a fabulous holiday destination throughout the year.

Moragne

Les Capucines is only 20 minutes from the gorgeous Atlantic beaches and a few minutes more to the historic old harbour town of La Rochelle as well as the glamorous offshore islands of Isle de Re, Orlon and Aix. Also close by are a variety of interesting towns including Jonzac which is a brandy distilling town and thermal spa; Saintes with its rich Roman heritage and elaborate ecclesiastical buildings; Royan is a glitzy young resort with fabulous beaches backed up by miles of pine forest; Rochefort is an appealing 17th century naval town with its former rope works and naval museum. Less than 30 minutes away attractions include the “Hermione” - a faithful recreation of Lafayettes frigate in Rochefort; the Aquarium at La Rochelle; the Chateau Roche Courbon at St. Porchaire. Less than an hour away attractions include tours of the great Cognac houses such as Remy Martin, Martell, Ottard ; the Aqua Playground at the Antilles de Jonzac and the Zoo at La Palmyre near Royan. A little further afield attractions include the famous Futuroscope, just north of Poitiers; the Vallee des Singes (Monkey Valley) in the Vienne, the Loire Valley with its many Chateaux less than 2 hours drive north and the beautiful Dordogne with its rolling countryside less than 2 hours drive south. On arrival, you will find your gite fully stocked with brochures for all the local attractions together with recommendations from ourselves and previous guests for many local shops, restaurants and markets.
