Location description from owner
The Basse-Normandie region
In Normandy, La Manche offers a wealth of must see sites: Mont Saint Michel, the Cité de la Mer, Tatihou Island... Laden with history, the natural and architectural heritage of la Manche will fill you with wonder. In this amazing setting, discover breathtaking natural spots, key historical sites and monuments: 200 sites and places to visit will make your stay truly enchanting.
The Bay of the Mont Saint Michel
Panoramic views and legend: standing on the cliff tops at Champeaux and Carolles, turn your eyes out to sea, you will enjoy a magnificent view over the bay! Now look downwards: a stream called 'Le Lude' (its real name is in fact 'le Crapot') has carved its way through the valley at the foot of the cliffs measuring from 60 to 90 metres high. The site has been protected since 1973. Legend has it that the valley was "cut open by Archangel Saint Michel's sword during his fight against Satan, the latter having taken refuge on the Rock of Sard (also known as 'Devil's chair').
The Tidal Bore
In the bay of Mont Saint Michel the tidal range can exceed 14 meters; when the tide comes in the sea floods the bay over a width of 25 kilometres and at a speed of often more than a meter a second. Born of this speed, a flood wave – the bore – approximately 50 centimetres high, is formed. Don't miss this spectacle which attracts both spectators and kayakers!
Granville is a lively fishing and commercial port, with a busy marina, and many seafood restaurants fronting the harbour -and the shopping is very good as well! It also has a casino, and is the birthplace of Christian Dior, whose former home, set on the cliffs above the town,is now a museum and gardens, open to the public.Known as the 'Monaco of the north',the town has an old part - the 'haute ville'- with museums and art galleries, and views over the beaches below.
Avranches and the Scriptorial
Avranches is a lovely old city, with a fine cathedral and commanding views over the bay of Mont St Michel and Le Mont itself.
It was Patton's headquarters after D Day,and has many reminders of that period. There is a fine scriptorium with many historical documents.
Since 1791 Avranches has been the custodian of books from the religious communities around Avranches: almost 4,000 volumes, provenance of the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel, many of which are incunabula! Today, these manuscripts are exhibited in the Scriptorial of Avranches, and their history is revealed.
Jersey and Chausey
Taking the hydrofoil from Granville to Jersey makes an interesting day out,and you can spend any spare sterling and practise your English in M & S!
The islands of Chausey are a short boat trip from Granville.Only the main island is inhabited - by local fishermen - and it has some lovely beaches. It is a nature reserve and only cycling is allowed. There are 62 islands at high tide and 365 at low tide!

- Very Good
“Excellent villa in lovely area”
We had a wonderful, relaxed holiday here in August 2016. The house is well sited for a huge amount of Normandy and Brittany attractions and is comfortable, spacious, clean, tidy and well maintained. It is very child friendly and our toddler was very well provided for with plenty of garden equipment, paddling pool, toys, books, and cot. The garden is large and peaceful with great views to Avranches. We really enjoyed using the barbecue and relaxing outside in the evenings. The local supermarkets are great and only a 10 min drive away in Avranches, which is a beautiful town to explore. A great number of attractions are within a short drive - we visited Mont St Michel, St Malo, the fantastic Champrepus Zoo, Granville, and the fantastic beach at Julouville. Highly recommended for a relaxing family holiday.
