The Nord-Pas-de-Calais region
Pas de Calais has many beautiful areas, towns and villages. Noted for its superb beaches and resorts, undulating countryside with secluded woods and scenic river valleys. It is a region proud of its traditions where fairs, fetes, markets and festivities are part of everyday life. Steeped in history, discover the rich heritage of the regions monuments, museums and historic sites dating from the Roman times to the last World Wars.
Find out what it is like to drive in 50's Britain and discover a much slower pace of life. The roads here are rarely busy and you can find yourself wondering, 'where has all the traffic gone'?
This area also offers an enormous number of attractions for a wide range of diverse interests and ages. Some examples are:
Montreuil-sur-Mer a picturesque town where Victor Hugo wrote Les Miserables and is celebrated every year.
Berck-sur-Mer a classic seaside resort with fabulous beaches. A kite festival is held here every year.
Le Touquet with miles of sandy beaches, water park (Aqualud), horse-racing, casinos, music festivals, chic shops and restaurants.
Abbeville and its shopping centre and Neo Gothic cathedral.
Arras the capital of Pas de Calais and is renowned for its beautiful Flemish architecture. The town with its underground tunnels was used in WW1 as a hospital and resting place for injured allied soldiers makes an interesting visit.
Agincourt a museum offers an overview of the battle and weapons.
Lens is a newly opened Louvre gallery (annexe of the Paris Louvre)
La Baie de La Somme bordered on each side by the contrasting resorts of Saint Valery and Le Crotoy. Take a boat ride to see the seals and glorious views across the bay or a steam train ride round the bay or the three hour guided walk across the bay for the more adventurous.
Parc du Marquenterre a 200 acre bird sanctuary with over 200 species. You can walk the 6km of trails or enjoy a leisurely ride on a horse drawn carriage.
Amiens famous for its Gothic cathedral, claimed to be the biggest in Europe. The waterfront area is particularly attractive with its large selection of bars and restaurants alongside the Somme.
Visit the war cemeteries at: Etaples, Arras, Vimy Ridge, Thiepval, Albert plus the battlefields at Arras, Somme and the Menin Gate, Ypres in Belgium.
Naours (Near Amiens) is a subterranean city dating from the 3rd century and Samara a pre-historic exhibition centre.
For children - seaside towns including Berck, Merlimont, Le Touquet and Fort Mahon. The sealife centre at Boulogne, water park at Le Touquet and Hesdin, theme parks at Berck and Dennenbroecq and the maze at Buire-le-Sec.
The pretty village of Saulchoy benefits from a restaurant and bar/tabac and is within a 10 minute walk of the cottage. This area is also perfect for playing golf, (Nampont 10 minutes, Belle Dune 30 minutes) walking, fishing, cycling, horse-riding, canoeing, swimming, bowling and picnics. We stayed here with 2 young children and had a wonderful time. Geoff and Irene were very welcoming and gave us lots of wonderful and helpful advice on places to visit. Geoff even lent us his sat nav which was invaluable. The Granary itself was spotlessly clean and very spacious with everything that we needed. The flowers, baguette and bottle of bubbly waiting for us on the kitchen table was a lovely way to be greeted. The attached games rooms was good for the children when the weather wasn't so good and they love the swimming pool. There was plenty of parking at The Granary and the drive from Calais was very straight forward and only took about an hour. The village restaurant was superb with excellent food, and we were made to feel very welcome especially with our limited knowledge of French although we did give it a good go. The Granary is in the Somme region was an ideal central base to visit various interests, including the Canadian War Memorial in Vimy which was superb and very moving and La Coupole in Saint Omer where the V2 rockets were stored and launched. Again extremely well explained, with audio guides. On a lighter note Disneyland Paris was about a 2.5 hour drive away and we had a fabulous fun packed day there. If you want beaches then there is a fabulous sandy beach about 30 mins away, with golden sand, warm waters, spotless clean with excellent restaurants and shops. Overall we had a wonderful stay, the children had a blast and we would definitely return.

"More than welcoming stay"
The owners were very welcoming, greeting us on our arrival. The wine. cheese and bread was a lovely welcoming gift (and nice to settle down to after a long drive!). The kids loved the pool which was maintained perfectly. The Granary is approx 30 mins to the Opal Coast where we visited Le Touquet and is a very well kept beach and a nice little town to visit. Otherwise approx 1hr drive to the Somme battlefields which we visited Albert (museum made from underground tunnels) and the Canadian memorial in Beaumont-Hamel (battlefield of the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme), very humble place with trenches which captured the kids imaginations. We also visited Nausicaa (a very good aquarium 1hr back up towards Calais in Boulogne). We need to return just to visit the many sites that are around the area! We've not even mentioned the games room that Geoff has created in the barn - perfect for when the weather wasn't on our side! Not only that but the extensive DVD collection that they have available more than kept the kids quiet during the evenings! All in all we could not recommend the Granary and Geoff and Irene enough; a fantastic "shabby chic" place to stay; Geoff and Irene are a lovely couple who could not do enough for us during our stay.

"Everything you could ask for in a family gite"
I had spotted The Granary after trawling through many sites and pages , it stood out due its pretty appearance , great pool , games room , spacious garden and only an hour from the Eurotunnel .This was our first trip abroad as a family and first time in France so everything from the language , driving on the right and the way of life was new to us ! We were not dissapointed ....it is a gorgeous place with everything you need for a family . The games room is great ...pool table, ping pong , darts and indoor and outdoor toys , a swing set , pool , gas bbq and a lovely wood burning stove if the evenings are chilly ! There is Sky tv and a HUGE dvd selection available too for chill times !! Irene and Geoff live on site, and are really friendly but in no way invasive and it feels very private .They were so helpful with directions , tips for where to shop and the way of life etc to us novice travellers ! The area is so pretty and unspoilt with so much to do and see , we couldnt fit it all in, in a week. so we will definitely be back and and staying in 'The Granary 'will feel like a home from home !!
