For the nature lovers there are many walks and cycling routes through the rolling countryside. There are breathtaking views of the Pyrenees from the hill above Cammas de Bas. Highlights are wild asparagus picking during March and April, orchids and the arrival of nightingales in early summer. The autumn colours of the vines after harvesting in September are a sight to see. Our hens provide fresh eggs for breakfast throughout the year. For the historian there are numerous castles, abbeys and medieval villages in the vacinity. Some favourites are: Montsegur, Lastours, Puilarens, Queribus and not forgetting Carcassonne with its magnificent fortified Cite! Why not visit one of the many markets to sample local produce and see the characters selling it or just to sit in a cafe and watch the world go by. The Malepere wine is one of the latest appelations and is growing in esteem. Some of our favourites are Domaine le Fort from Montreal, Chateau Guilhelm from a nearby village, most producers offer free tasting. Did you know that they were making Blanquette in Limoux 150 years before Champagne was invented? Why not visit a Blanquette producer in Limoux and sample for yourself.

The Occitanie region

The area surrounding Carcassonne is rich in history with many spectacular villages and towns worth visiting. Notwithstanding the connection with the Cathars and the castles of the region being used by the Cathars during medieval times. Driving through the hills and vineyards is as rewarding as climbing to the top of the hill to get to a particular castle. Out of the peak season can be even more spectacular as the autumn colours of the vineyards are followed by a dusting of snow on the Pyrenees. In winter the ski slopes are open to offer winter fun for the more adventurous. The Mediterranean coast is just over an hour away with beaches at Narbonne Plage, Port Leucat with the oyster beds and the coastline down towards Spain. There are lakeside beaches nearer (Carcassonne Plage and the Lac du Montbel).Visiting vineyards and wine tasting can be a highlight with Fitou, Corbieres and Minnervois wines being well known. I would also recommend the lesser known areas of Cabardes and Malepere where there are some hidden gems of wines waiting to be discovered.. No trip would be complete without visiting Limoux and tasting Blanquette, a sparkling wine created some 150 years before Champagne was invented.

Montreal

Located 10 minutes from Carcassonne airport, Montreal has a pharmacy, a butchers, two bakers, a newsagent, a post office and two restaurants. There is an Intermarche supermarket which is even open on Sunday mornings ( a rare thing in France) with petrol station attached. There are tennis courts in the village. Bram is 8km away and has a lively market on a Wednesday morning as well as a Carrefour supermarket, with petrol station attached. Other markets worth visiting are Mirepoix on a Monday morning, Limoux on a Friday morning and Esperaza on a Sunday morning. Carcassonne Cite is a World Heritage Site and is a medieval walled town, with many restaurants , shops and cafes. The walk around the ramparts is worth doing as is the visit to the Donjon (keep). You can hire boats or go on scheduled trips on the Canal du Midi from both Carcassonne or Castelnaudary. Many villages have fetes and vide grenniers (empty barn - a bit like a car boot or yard sale) at weekends in summer. There are also regular events with parades every weekend in January and February for the Limoux Festival. Toques and Clochers is a wine festival in April in Limoux and the Bandas is a brass band weekend in May in Montreal.

“Marvellously relaxing stay in a beautifully idyllic surrounding”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2016

This most marvellous rural gite is situated just outside the village of Montreal, about 20 mins drive from Carcassonne. Our lovely, welcoming hosts, Mick and Inga, whose knowledge of local attractions and activities afforded us with some great daily experiences, have created a wonderfully inviting place to holiday. Surrounded by fields of vineyards and sunflowers, it is a picturesque spot, perfectly situated for exploring the local area - Mirepoix, Limoux, Lac de Montbel, and of course Carcassonne. The pool is divine or to quote my eldest "awesome" and truly the best way to spend a hot afternoon under the clear blue sky. The gite is well equipped and organised, with all the basic essentials ready for you in the kitchen. It is superb to have the farm animals on site. Both girls loved checking for eggs and my youngest was in her element when helping with the 2 ponies. The best advice from my youngest for a hot day, is to get up early and go sight seeing in the morning when it is not too hot and then be back in the pool in the afternoon. We had the most relaxing beautiful holiday here and I think we all found it rather difficult to leave. We will be coming back next summer! Thank you Mick and Inga

It is our aim to make our guests feel welcome and at home and we are thrilled to see that our guests feel so at home in the space we have created.

“Idyllic, quiet setting with fantastic hosts”

Reviewed 25 Feb 2015

Fantastic little gite nestled in the french countryside. Located just outside Montreal, only a few minutes to Carcassonne by car. Great location with use of the swimming pool. Good touring base for the local area and beyond. Great for the kids too. Inga and Mick are fab hosts who live next door. Very friendly & knowledgable. Gave us fresh picked mushrooms from the woods and eggs from their hens for breakfast. A great gite to stay in.
