The Poitou-Charentes region
The Charente is famous for its sunny micro-climate. The countryside is undulating, growing sunflowers and grapevines. Producing its own famous delicious drink 'Pineau', a very nice aperitif. The way of life is relaxed and local people are very friendly.
The west coast of France is about 1.5 hours drive away. There you will find pretty white sandy beach and parts with high waves; good for surfing! In the other direction there is Arcachon known for its waves and blue sea.
There is a beach and lake with water sports and indoor/outdoor pools in Angouleme and other lakes with beautiful beaches at Brossac (10mins) and La Jimaye (30mins).
Everything you need is 5 minutes away at Montmoreau, local Carrefour supermarket, boulangeries, pharmacies, newsagents, bars, restaurants, banks, post office etc etc. The local market, 10 mins away, at Chalais on a Monday sells everything (including live chickens).
Bordeaux - 90mins, St Emilion - 60mins, Cognac - 50mins, Royan 90mins.
And last but not least there is Aubeterre! (10mins) Voted one of France's most beautiful villages, Aubeterre is most definitely worth a visit.

"Tranquil and home from home"
We had booked a holiday much father north in France and with the pending dower weather and lack of interest in the area we decided to make a break further south and return to the Dordogne hopefully, We happened on this accommodation in the Charentes region with availability at short notice and we were glad we did as its a gem of an area. We were lucky enough to have the Gite to ourselves so it made the experience very pleasant and tranquil and thoroughly enjoyed the surrounding nature literally all around us (wild deer and birds in the fields and woods next door) and some days we just sat outside with a quick dip in the pool, others we travelled 40min to cognac or St Emilion or locally to Auberterre. There are plenty of places to visit near by which are tourist friendly but not over crowded in june so make for a nice french experience. The Gite its self is well equipped (we had the grand gite for 4 nights) and specious and has a great shower and bath, The bed is extremely comfortable and we both slept very well. The TV has UK channels but took a while so sort them all out to a more usable list , its a bit annoying having to look through 12 regional variations of ITV before getting to the next channel. The Gite was very clean up arriving and we had a little furry friend with us and he was made very welcome too. We were greeted with a welcome pack which was excellent, the home made jam was to die for and i managed to secure an extra supply from Roz when leaving (thanx). Del and Roz's hard work with these Gite's really does show and we would recommend a stay here if you want to RELAX as we certainly did. This area is a hidden gem and a worth alternative to the much loved Dordogne. We did stay one night in the Bon Nuit as we decided to stay on the area for one extra night (the grand gite was booked that night) and found this to be well equipped but a little too small, with it backing onto the owners accommodation it was quite loud and didn't feel very private but perfect for one night.
Thank you so much for all your kind words and feedback. Just to say normally Bon Nuit has extra sound insulation between the barn and the gite but due to the one night stay this didn't seem practicable

"Peace, tranquiiity and vegetables fresh from Derek's garden!"
We stayed in Roz and Derek's gite last summer and absolutely loved it. The apartment is clean and spacious and the bedroom has a colonial feel about it, just oozing with character. The area is quiet and we went on lots of lovely walks and cycles (bicycles provided), and generally had a lovely time kicking back and relaxing. Roz and Derek were great hosts, from the welcome basket, to giving us fresh vegetables for the barbecue, and lots of good information about the region, whilst at the same time allowing us lots of privacy in the back garden. I'd highly recommend this gite, and will definitely go back again.
Thank you and so pleased you enjoyed your stay including our home grown vegetables and fresh eggs, we do enjoy sharing the fruits of our labour with all our guests.

"Chez Goret - A perfect get-away from everyday life."
After a short drive (approximately 1 hour) from Bordeaux airport, we arrived at Chez Goret to a very warm welcome from Derek and Roz and immediately knew that the week was going to be a very relaxing one. Petit Gite was our home for the week and was clean, bright and very comfortable. Inside, was a kitchen with all of the usual equipment, which meant that we could make the most of the local produce on offer in the area, a TV (in case we fancied catching up with the news etc), a folder full of information about activities / trips / restaurants and a lovely bathroom and bedroom, in which we had some very sound night's sleep! There are plenty of places in the Charente region to go and visit during the days / evenings, but it is advisable to have your own transport to do so. St. Emilion is a short drive away and offers everything for those into their wines and we particularly enjoyed sauntering around Aubeterre. It's also worth mentioning that there is a large Supermarket, around 4.5km away in Montmoreau which we found very handy on a couple of occassions. Derek and Roz were more than happy for us to make use of the bikes they had available to ride down into town. In summary, we had a fantastic week at Chez Goret and felt 100% re-charged by the end of our stay. The visitors book in the Petit Gite is also testament to the fact that others have had a similarly enjoyable time as ourselves. Derek and Roz went out of their way to ensure we were well looked after and it's definitely somewhere where we'll be going back to!
Thank you so much for taking the time to review Chez Goret for us. We are very lucky to be in the beautiful sunny Charente and yet only 1 to 1 and half hours away from 4 airports, Bordeaux, Bergerac, Limoges, and Angouleme and only 2 hours from Poitiers.

"excellent place to stay, well looked after, peaceful and friendly hosts (who also cook a good meal)."
My wife and I had a very good time at Chez Goret. It suited us because of location as we were looking for a house to buy. It was a comfortable home to return to after a day out house-hunting, a place where we could relax. The wood fire was especially appreciated. The area has lots of little villages and bourgs to go to as well and great for walking. The nearest sizeable village is Montmoreau, only a short drive, with a Carrefour supermarket.
Thank you and we're glad you found somewhere to set up home in France. Many of our guests come and stay out of season for this reason and we do our best to help people through the process if they wish. We don't regret our move here for one minute.

"An oasis of calm and hospitality in rural France"
Chez Goret is located in a wonderfully peacful location deep in rural France but close enough to all the activities that the Charente offers to enjoy a holiday full of variety. The facilities in the cottage that we stayed in were excellent and the welcome that we received from the owners was very hospitable. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They had obviously put a lot of thought into developing and equipping the accommodation and it provided a very comfortable base for our holiday. Whilst we were there they were just completing the swimming pool and its surrounding terrace but it was obviously going to be a great addition to the holiday accommodation. We are looking forward to returning soon to take a dip in the new pool.
Thank you for your lovely words. We do consider ourselves to be very lucky living in such a beautiful location and sharing all the benefits of the local countryside, including the loan of free bikes so that people can amble through the local villages and bars if they wish.
