Location description from owner

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Montlaur is in the heart of the Corbieres wine growing region of Languedoc Rousiilon - one of the sunniest areas in France with over 300 days of sunshine a year. It is the perfect location to explore the Cathar castles, the mountains an the Mediterranean and to enjoy this beautiful region rich in history. Ideally placed for walking, cycling, and swimming in local lakes and rivers. Carcassonne, 25 mins drive, is the second most visited French city, following Paris. It has an amazing walled and fortified city dating from the Middle Ages and is central to the Cathar history as told in the Kate Mosse books “Sepulchre” and “Labyrinth”. The castle has a complete medieval defensive architectural ensemble and is a Unesco World Heritage Site. The town has a thriving centre with shops, markets , cinémas and a theatre an hosts a major music festival in the summer The Canal de Midi, also a World Heritage site, meanders through the region. The nearest section is at Trebes , twenty minutes away with the opportunity to take boat rides to Carcassonne and beyond. The Mediterranean is just an hour away with long sandy beaches and azure sea . The Pyrenees, and the nearest Ski Station, are about an hour awayThe Cathar Chateaux of Lastours, Villerouge-Termenè, Termes, Quéribus, Peyrepertuse and many others are all within easy reach (30-60 minutes) as is Monsegur, the last standing point of the Cathars situated in the Pyrenees. Mirepoix is a lovely town to visit enroute to Montsegur . Minerve, is a fortified village where the “Parfaits” (type of Cathar pastors) refused to abjure their faith and died singing at the stake. It is situated on a stunning gorge and is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France .

Montlaur

Montlaur, a small village of less than 600 residents, is also a thriving little centre for the six villages in the Val de Dagne and has a post office, traditional baker's, pharmacy, small supermarket, butcher's and hairdresser's plus five different wine producers providing wine tasting in the village. Market stalls with organic bread, local produce including fruit vegetables and cheeses, and of course wine tasting take place twice a week . There is a small children's well equipped play area and pleasant park. There are numerous fetes and village festivals during the summer where you can participate in village meals and dance to live music.. Petanque is the favourite sport.Lagrasse (12km), is listed as one of the prettiest villages in France, with a 13th century abbey, humpback bridge , covered market, cobblestone streets, and swimming along the River Orbieu with a lifeguard on duty in high season . It is good place to explore at any time of the year and has a number of good restaurants. Many cultural events in summer including concerts , open air plays and Occident singing There is a country park with an attractive sandy beach and ((supervised) lake swimming 20 mins away close to Carcassonne with an O2 Adventure Park rope, wire and zip wire course .River swimming with lifeguard in Lagrasse in peak season and river and lake swimming within very easy each. Horse riding and trekking are available in Montlaur and white-water rafting is also close by. Bikes can be hired and delivered to the house and some of the major walking routes in the region pass through the village.

“Ideal Location!”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2016

We stayed in l'Ancienne Ecurie for three weeks in June 2016. It was a wonderful base to do some walking along the Canal du Midi (20 minutes away) at Trebes, discover some lovely towns and villages in the Corbieres region of the Languedoc (Lagrasse, Trebes, Narbonne), eat at some amazing restaurants recommended by the owners of L'Ancienne Ecurie. Felicity and Peter (the owners) were great hosts, very friendly and helpful and they left lots of useful information in the house in relation to places to visit etc The village house retains many of the original features but has modern bathrooms and kitchen. A huge advantage was the lovely courtyard filled with plants, flowers and shrubs where we spent many days sitting relaxing, reading and enjoying lots of lovely meals with friends. Would love to return.

“A classical French experience.”

Reviewed 6 Mar 2016

A beautiful, traditional French house surrounded by some stunning countryside. Our hosts Felicity and Peter made us very welcome and their house and this wonderful part of France did the rest to make our holiday an extremely invigorating French experience.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are delighted you enjoyed your holiday here in the heart of our village and had such mellow weather despite coming in the middle of winter. We hope to see you again.

“Ideal for a family holiday, excellent accommodation and wonderful location”

The house was well equipped and clean. Felicity and Peter were exceptional hosts. We could not fault anything we will be going back!

“The perfect old Village house to discover from Carcassonne to Narbonne area.”

We will repeat for sure, as we loved the house, the Village, the area, and we had an incredible welcome from Felicity and Peter.

“Good centre of village gite”

Reviewed 7 Oct 2014

We stayed in gite for 8 days in September 2014. Sympathetically renovated old village house situated in centre of village, retaining many original features. It has bags of character and space but also well appointed with good modern, well equiped kitchen and 2 excellent modern bathrooms. The courtyard is secluded and provided with table, chairs, barbeque and clothes drier. Excellent area for eating outside. The owners were so nice and helpful and could not do enough for us. They really were first class. Thouroughly enjoyed our stay.

“Chic relaxing authentic home. Modern kitchen set in rustic French house, with thoughtful touches from approachable hosts”
