The West Wing is part of Fronfraith Hall (see wikipedia and facebook); a large country house built in 1863 and was the family home of the renowned Canadian novelist and playwright Robertson Davies (also see wikipedia). It is set amongst the idyllic splendor of the Mid Wales Hills on the Shropshire border, located close to the historic and attractive border towns of Montgomery, Welshpool, Shrewsbury and Ludlow.

The West Wing at Fronfraith Hall is a perfect setting for families or couples for holidays, short stays and weekend breaks at anytime throughout the year. It is especially idyllic during the summer months and during the Christmas/New Year period.

The West Wing has been recently restored to reflect it's Nineteenth Century origins and it boasts one large double bedroom, one large twin bedroom, an entrance hall, a bathroom and a large open plan living/dining and kitchen area. This room is very spacious and is naturally lit by two large windows and a large seated bay window which overlooks the beautiful rolling hills of the Severn valley. A fireplace with wood burner creates a cozy atmosphere in the evening to relax by and enjoy the peace and quiet of the surrounding countryside. There is also a good selection of books and novels for you to read.

Up to 7 people can be accommodated with bedlinen and towels supplied. Children are most welcome and there is an additional double bed sofa in the master bedroom (a cot with bedding can also be provided upon request). Indoor and outdoor games/toys are provided for children to play with.

Surrounded by 7 acres of private gardens, which includes 4 acres of lawned terraces, there are plenty of areas to relax or play in total privacy (more than one acre is set aside for exclusive access for the West Wing). The surrounding gardens also feature an original walled Victorian kitchen garden and a pond surrounded by rhododendrons/woodland. It is an excellent spot to observe the local wildlife including deer, bats, red-kites, herons and buzzards (to name but a few).

The nearby picturesque 18th Century market town of Montgomery is dominated by the ruins of Montgomery Castle. Here you can dine at the Michelin starred Checkers Hotel or cozy Castle Kitchens, but should you wish to eat in, there is a fully equipped kitchen area. There are also many other good local restaurants and pubs within easy distance.

Nearby attractions include many sites of antiquity including: the ruins of Dolforwyn and Montgomery castles (both free admission); the magnificent Powys Castle (National Trust); and Gregynogg Hall.

There are numerous excellent walks for both the casual walker and the more serious hiker. Fronfraith Hall is situated within 15 minutes from the long distance Offas Dyke path and a similar distance from Glyndwrs Way. The Shropshire Hills and Shropshire Way are a little further.

A few miles to the West, along the river Severn and Montgomery canal, lies the historic Welsh town of Newtown. This is just a few minutes drive away where a selection of well known supermarkets (Morrissons, Tesco and Lidl), local shops, a cinema, library, and an indoor swimming pool may be found.

A little further West still, lies the historic towns of Llanidloes and Machynlleth (home to the Centre for Alternative Technology) and is just a stones throw from Aberdovey; an unspoilt fishing village and sea resort with a wonderful sandy beach).

It is an hours beautiful drive or train journey (via Newtown) to the Welsh coast.

Location description from owner

The Wales region

Fronfraith Hall resides in the beautiful Welsh Marches region. An area spanning the English/Welsh border and noted for it's green hills, abundance of nature, tranquility and historical defences.

The relatively close proximity to several international airports (six within approx two hours drive) and national train links (15 mins) make it an easy destination to reach. It is also an ideal stop off point during longer journies when wishing to explore other places within the UK, Ireland or Europe.

Snowdownia and Brecon Beacons National Parks are about an hour away as is the the lovely coastline of Mid-Wales.

Outdoor sports such as walking, climbing, cycling, horse-riding and kayaking as well as more leisurely scenic tours are particularly popular.

“Amazing house in the beautiful countryside”

Reviewed 12 Apr 2014

We had an amazing time in the west wing! The house was gorgeous and the surroundings beautiful. It was a relaxing stay and the house had everything you could possibly want or need including a fireplace ready to be lit, binoculars for bird watching, board games and milk in the fridge! The bottle of wine just topped of an incredible stay! Would recommend it to everyone!
