Description

Montemarcello is an enchanting coastal hilltop village located on the Liguria / Tuscany border and belongs to the exclusive club of "Most Beautiful Villages of Italy". Its "terra-tetto" (ground to roof) houses, typically have three or four floors and are brightly coloured as is the tradition in the Region of Liguria.

Set in the Montemarcello-Magra Regional Park, located in the Gulf of Poets, so-called because both Byron and Shelley frequented the area, Montemarcello is now home to artists, writers and journalists drawn by it's timeless charm and character.

Montemarcello is an idylic holiday destination for, well, doing anything really, whether it be relaxing (there are some fantastic beaches nearby) walking (coastal footpaths with breathtaking views abound and the path down to Lerici is absolutely stunning!), cycling (Montemarcello is a regular haunt of cyclists) and, due to its strategic position, it is also possible to explore the magical

Montemarcello is an idylic holiday destination for, well, doing anything really, whether it be relaxing (there are some fantastic beaches nearby) walking (coastal footpaths with breathtaking views abound and the path down to Lerici is absolutely stunning!), cycling (Montemarcello is a regular haunt of cyclists) and, due to its strategic position, it is also possible to explore the magical villages of the Cinque Terre or visit other nearby jewels such as Tellaro, Lerici, Sarzana, Carrara, Portovenere, Lucca and even Florence and Pisa are within easy reach. For the more nautical types amongst you, boat hire and other water-borne activities can be found close by at Bocca di Magra and Lerici.

There are some great restaurants in the area serving wonderful local cuisine especially fish dishes and should you wish to taste some of the locally produced wine there are several wineries within a half an hour of Montemarcello (at Ortonovo and Castelnuovo Magra) where you can sample Colli di Luni DOC.

A visit to the centre of nearby Sarzana is a must!; it has a wonderful atmosphere, wealthy cultural heritage as well as an enchanting castle. During the summer its' narrow streets are lined with stalls selling anything from antique furniture to jewellery and books, and there are always lots of open-air events and concerts taking place.

To visit the Cinque Terre simply hop on a train at Sarzana and get off at Monterosso the furthest away of the "five towns". From there you can either walk along the breathtaking coastal footpath to Vernazza and the other towns or hop back on the train if it's a really hot day.
