Pitrali Apartments, Monte Pedrosu, Sardinia

The Pitrali Pool Apartments are set in pretty gardens just under 2 kms from Cala Girgolu Beach, a picture postcard arc of sand edging a turquoise sea, rather quaintly serviced, when we visited in high season, by a small boat which stopped by, serving gelato (ice cream), cold drinks and coffees from its deck.

The three pastel lemon and natural stone apartments share a lovely swimming pool (10m x 5m) bordered by paved and lawn terraces which is fenced and gated, for the peace of mind of those with small children. Keeping one apartment for their own occasional use, the truly charming Sardinian Doctor owners are looking forward to welcoming their English guests to the remaining two apartments. Both have been tastefully furnished to maintain their light and airy appeal and offer ideal holiday accommodation. Keeping one apartment for their own occasional use, the truly charming Sardinian Doctor owners are looking forward to welcoming their English guests to the remaining two apartments. Both have been tastefully furnished to maintain their light and airy appeal and offer ideal holiday accommodation. The kitchen areas of the open plan living rooms are both nicely tiled with stained wood units and equipped with a full cooker, microwave and fridge/freezer, with a dining table nearby for the occasions when you aren't eating outside and a sofa and chairs. There is a washing machine in both tiled shower rooms.

The pretty gardens have mostly been laid to lawn with lemon and olive trees and plantings of amongst other flowering shrubs, an eye catching sky blue plumbago A purpose built barbeque in the garden is for the use of the occupants of either apartments.

The village of Monte Pedrosu is just under 1km away, within a 15 mins stroll and offers a choice of two or three trattorias, as well as a café/bar, a butcher and a minimarket but if you like to be spoilt for choice, then you won't be disappointed by the small town of San Teodoro, just a 10 mins drive with an array of shops and restaurants and also coincidentally blessed with a vast gently shelving white sand beach that would compete on equal terms with some of the best of the Caribbean.

We consider car hire useful, but please bear in mind that if you intend arriving by means of bus from Olbia Airport (4 per day) you will need to carry your luggage the last 900ms - taxis are few and far between in Sardinia.

Pitrali Pool Apartment

On the lower level, the entrance terrace to this apartment is via a lovely shady path descending in a flight of shallow stone steps, passed the apartments sunny patio below the barbecue area. Decorated in a combination of neutral shades and sea green, the living room is furnished with a rattan sofa and chairs and a dining table. To one side, the smart kitchen, with ample cupboard and work top space, is equipped with a full cooker, microwave and fridge freezer.

The double bedroom and the second bedroom, which has full sized bunk beds in addition to a single bed, share a nicely appointed shower room, where the washing machine is stationed

The swimming pool is accessed by 3 roman steps and is 10m x 5m and has a max depth of 1.9m and a min depth of 1m.

The Sardinia region

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, a name familiar to many but hitherto relatively unknown as a holiday destination, Sardinia has over 1,800km of coastline, much of it utterly unspoilt and fringed by white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear waters.

The Gulf of Orosei on the Sardinian east coast and just over an hours drive south from Olbia Airport covers an area of some 80 square kilometres from Cape Comino in the north to Cape Di Monte Santo further south. Noted for its craggy white cliffs and powder white coves backed by wild and uninhabited mountainous regions, its wonderful country for hikers and nature lovers. Here too, the coastal waters of Sardinia are so clean and clear that colonies of beautiful coral grow on the seabed and the myriadas of fish and other marine fauna attract Scuba divers from around the world, as well as the local fisherman of course.

The medieval market town of Orosei, from which the area takes its name, stands on the banks of the River Cedrino and boasts a number of lovely old churches and a warren of narrow cobbled streets leading to numerous small piazzas. The town is surrounded by lush green farmland bursting with orange and olive plantations and edged with a spectacular stretch of coastline and many, many kilometres of powder white sand beaches fringed by fragrant pinewoods.

Matching the beauty of its coastline, the hinterland of Sardinia is a magnificent and uncompromising landscape of high rugged mountains, deep gorges and rolling wooded countryside, still in some places inhabited by wild boar, a Sardinian delicacy and quite commonly featured on the menus of restaurants throughout the island.

Monte Petrosu

Monte Pedrosu, Sardinia

As the saying goes, less is often more and this can truly be said of the little village of Monte Pedrosu. A convenient 25 kms from Olbia, its supermarket, butcher, choice of 2 restaurants, cafe and a hairdresser more than adequately meet the immediate needs of the population in its vicinity, supplemented by the occasional traveling shop selling artisan products.

The rural community spreads east of the old coast road (now superceded by a motor way rolling south of Olbia further inland) towards the Capo Coda Cavallo where the granite rock is blanketed in spring by brightly coloured blossoms of the maquis vegetation, filling the air with the spicy aroma of lavender, thyme, myrtle and rosemary.

“Fabulous holiday in a beautiful location”

Reviewed 7 Apr 2014

We had a fabulous holiday in the pitrali pool apartment last sep/oct with our 2 and a half year old and our 4 month old. the apartment is in a fantastic location, close to a beautiful beach, cala girgolu, and only a 10/15 min walk to the little charming village of monte pedrosu. The apartment is also a 5 min walk to the hotel lu pitrali where we frequently went for morning coffee and pastry or for an apperativo in the evening in their leafy courtyard with outdoor couches and chairs. Cala girgolu, the local beach, has crystal clear water and good snorkelling with plenty of fish to see. It was lovely and quiet although we were there slightly out of season. The sand isn't really suitable for sandcastles but our 2 year old was more than happy paddling and collecting shells. A boat selling snacks and ice-creams came in on a daily basis which was a real treat but they stopped at the end of September. If you are planning on pushing a buggy from the apartment down to the beach I would suggest bringing a buggy with large wheels such as a Phil and Ted or a mountain buggy as it is a dirt track and a little stroller might be hard to push. There is an abundance of beaches in the surrounding area that are breathtakingly beautiful so we were glad we had a car to explore a bit. The local village of monte pedrosu while small has a great pizzeria a delicious spagetteria and a fabulous shop selling fresh pasta and biscuits. It also has 3 or 4 other restaurants and a small food market. The apartment while fairly basic in nature had everything we needed and was comfortable and cool. The pool was fantastic and fairly safe as it had a gate that limited access to kids. There was also a spacious garden around the apartment where our 2 year old could roam and pick flowers. There are some stone steps around that might be difficult smaller child to manage but were fine for a child older than 2 and a half. The apartment was in a very quiet area which suited us but may not suit a couple looking for more nightlife. All in all it was a fantastic holiday and we hope to return in the not too distant future
