The Sardinia region
Sardinia is a colourful sunny Island which boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean,
The official Language is Italian but the locals speak mainly in one of the numerous dialects that are widely used and diverse from one town to the next.
Alghero is on the North west coastline and is one of the biggest towns on the Island and the first Holiday destination to exist on the Island and the only resort to welcome holidaymakers alll year round helped also by the proximity of the airport allowing for easy travel..
Sardinia's coastlines are extremely varied from rocky White llimestone cliffs to rounded wind worn granite boulders and fine White sandy beaches. The beaches in Sardinia have been classified as some of the most beautiful in the world "Cala Goloritze"
The Sardinians are very welcoming and hospitable. The cuture and the traditions running strongly from generation to generation. Each town celebrating their patron saint with "Sagras" and "Festas" all strictly in traditional costume with dancing and singing and frequent bareback horse racing like "L'Ardia di Sedilo" and breakneck acrobatis "Pariglias"
The cuisine is mainly Italian although there are also many local dishes to be tasted. Fresh fish is always available aldong the costal areas, plus some very tasty dishes cah be had at one of the many "Agriturismo" dotted around the countryside which specialise in spit roast suckling pig and Wild Boar. Taste the local wines which vary from fresh sparkling proseccos to deep dark reds "Cannonau".
Sardinia is best known for it's beaches, but those who have taken the opportunity to visit the mountainous "Barbagia" and "Supramonte" have been known to say that perhaps some of the most beautiful places on the Island are infact inland!
In June and September the average temperature is approx 25°C during the day with 5 days average Sunshine per week
In July and August the average temperature is approx 29°C during the day with 6 days average Sunshine per week.
It is quite possible that there is no rain for 2 months in the summer.
There are 3 airports : Alghero (North west) Olbia (North East) and Cagliari (South)
The Island is surprisingly large and it takes at least 3 hours to drive from North to South!
Alghero is a lovely seaside resort with the most beautiful Historic Centre on the Island.
The coastline offers numerous fine white sandy beaches most with umbrella and lounger rental. Most beaches are gently sloping and very "child friendly" with delicate waves and no tidal currents. There are also many rocky promontories with caves and nature reserves which are great for walking enthusiats.
The town boasts a busy touristic marina plus a traditional fishing port with daily market also for meat, fruit and vegetables.
The Old Town Centre is a labirinth of narrow cobbled streets lined with Boutiques, restaurants, bars and shops some of which are still open at midnight! Sit and have a Cappuccino in one of the pituresque squares or take a walk along the sea wall which offers some spectacular views towards the point called Capo Caccia.
Taste some of the local specialities in one of the many restaurants and trattorias followed by a ccol drink in one of the colourful bars and maybe a "passeggiata" along the seafront Promenade lined with market stalls.
Alghero is easy to get to and easy to get around which is a good start for a stress free Holiday.
Villa il Tramonto is just 5km from the town centre (easy straight forward drive) but faar enough out of town to guarantee you a perfect night's sleep with no traffic or noisy neighbours. Enjoy the view over the Whole bay from your "Castle " on the hill!!!
