The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Montazels is at the centre of the Cathar region, with hill top castles and the medieval city of Carcassonne to remind you of the fascinating and often tragic history for which this region is renowned. Just across the valley from the cottage is Rennes le Chateau, centre of a mystery still very much alive with many books written and films made on the subject. The mystery is one of sudden wealth, secret codes and a search for treasure in the latter part of the 19th C. The link with the village is very strong - in 1852 Bérenger Saunière, the priest at the centre of the mystery was born in Montazels. Just type Montazels into any search engine and take your pick of the many web sites if you wish to delve deeper. Here you will find the story that gave rise to the Dan Brown book 'The Da Vinci Code'.

Couiza at 15 minutes walk is our nearest village & has 2 boulangeries, a supermarket, post office, cash machine, hair salon, pharmacy, 2 bars and 3 restaurants within a 15 minute walk. The larger towns of Quillan and Limoux with are a 20 minute drive. There is a footpath for a walk to Rennes-le-Chateau and numerous Cathar castles can be reached in under an hours drive.

Whether skiing in the Pyrennees, enjoying the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean or exploring hill top Cathar Castles, 'Maisons de Montazels' are ideally placed to enjoy all the Languedoc has to offer.

“Comfortable, charming, fine view and good base for exploring the area”

Reviewed 7 May 2015

We stayed in this charming house in the small village of Montazels during March and April. Three large bedrooms, a good sized dining room as well as a den and kitchen. One bathroom only. Did not appear to have air con but this was not a factor for us travelling off season. Used the cosy fireplace in the den. Relatively well maintained. Nice view from the upstairs windows, Can walk to Couiza for dinner, lunch, baguettes etc at the boulangerie. Great Sunday market at nearby Esperaza. Travel base for Carcassonne, Narbone, Beziers, Perpignon and various other places including gorges, vineyards etc. TV limited - suggest you bring a laptop and chromestick for example to broadcast to the TV.

Thank you for taking the time to review Maison de Vigne. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. No, we don't have air conditioning. In the days when these cottages were built I guess they knew how to keep a place cool in summer and warm in winter by using thick stone walls. Thank you also for your TV tip. It's good to know that even on holiday in France you can receive your favorite home channels from around the world.

“Gite with great views, lots of character and friendly neighbours”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2014

We stayed here for 6 months in 2013 and 2 weeks in 2014. The only reason we did not rate this place higher is that the chateau wall collapsed and blocked the access road (this was in no way any fault of the owners). This is a great base for exploring a fascinating and beautiful area. We would stay here again.

Thank you for your positive comments. Fortunately the vehicle access problem is only temporary and soon to be rectified, unlike reviews which are permanent.

“A first class property in a magnificent area.”

From the moment we arrived at Maison de Vignes we were impressed. None if the stark, barely equipped feel that comes with some gites, this felt like a home and was really well equipped for all our needs. The living room was very comfortable and had TV, DVD player and CD player, along with a selection of DVDs, CDs and books. The bedrooms were beautiful and furnished simply, but very tastefully. Plenty of chairs for outdoor seating and although on the side of a road, most days there wasn't a single car went by. The view! I could have sat and watched the view all day. We saw eagles and hoopoes from the front door. The area is so full of things to do. For us it was spotting wild flowers (which were exceptional) and walking. On other occasions it could be the history and the chateaux, the towns, villages and markets. So many reasons to go back, which we undoubtedly will do. No hesitation in recommending this property to anyone who enjoys France and its beautiful countryside and way of life.

Thank you for your review, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Maison de Vigne.
