“Beautiful gite with excellent fishing lake!”
We have just returned from an excellent holiday in this lovely 3 bedroom gite. It is very well equipped and the beds and sofas are extremely comfortable. We took our own linen and there were plenty of warm blankets. The pillows were French size but we managed to fit our pillow cases on them! There was plenty of hot water for the showers, which were also good. The Wi-Fi was the best that we have had in France and we had no problems whatsoever with it. All the bedrooms had lovely views over the grounds and were spacious, exactly as in the photos. The kitchen was very well equipped with a cupboard full of crockery and glasses of every size required. The fridge was large with a good sized freezer compartment. We didn't need to use the washing machine but it looked quite new and the dishwasher did an excellent job on a daily basis! The south facing garden was lovely with good furniture. The grounds were beautiful with a lovely lake and was well stocked with carp, tench and roach. Many hours were spent fishing and many good sized fish were caught (and returned to the lake!). Patrick was an extremely helpful and informative host and was available on site if we had needed any help. We visited Laon to see the Cathedral and the rest of the town. Unfortunately the funicular railway to take you from the lower town to the medieval part of the town is no longer running, but there are plenty of places to park up in the town. We also visited Coucy-le-Chateau for interesting afternoon, and had lunch at the cafe there (excellent Gallettes and Croque Monsieur). The Chemin du Dames was also an interesting day out and the Caverne du Dragon well worth a visit. The Axo plage at Montampteuil (only about 10-15 mins drive away - 5 Euros per adults, child 5-14 2 Euro, under 5 free) was great, lovely sandy beach, clean lake, excellent facilities and cafe/bar . Also lots of different play areas for children. Not forgetting the pedalos (5 euros for half and hour - need to give ID) and paddle boards. The village is only two minutes walk from the gite, so we could visit the Boulangerie each morning. The village grocery store was very handy and well stocked. The Pizzaria is still in village centre, providing pizzas, salads and pastas, either to eat in the restaurant or to take away (we did both!). The food is excellent and modestly priced. This was one of the nicest gites that we have stayed in over the past 20 years and would love to return in the future.
