Description from owner

A restored stone cottage at the end of a small "aldea" surrounded by gardens, fields and nature. It is a very rural setting in a small farming community, but surprisingly only 5 minutes from Sober with its restaurant, 2 bars, 2 shops, a surgery and much more.

A restored stone cottage at the end of a small "aldea" surrounded by gardens, fields and nature. It is a very rural setting in a small farming community, but surprisingly only 5 minutes from Sober with its restaurant, 2 bars, 2 shops, a surgery and much more.

The house comfortably sleeps 2 or a maximum of 3 and a cot can be provided. It is on the first floor with cellars underneath. A typical Galician kitchen and it's "cocina economica" , a lounge with a pellet oven (central heating), contains a sofa bed and a bed room with a large double bed . A bath room with shower (hot) under floor warming and downstairs access to a shaded garden with ample seating. Should it turn cold - no worries - just switch on the pellet oven (basic supply included). The property has been renovated to high standards but the "old charm" has been painstakingly preserved. Ecological and sustainable material have been used. The water comes from our own (certified) well and Photovoltaic arrays do supplement the power usage.

If you love gardening, this is the first "English" garden in Galicia and you are welcome to them and you have your own walled garden.

Monforte, nearby, is the main shopping centre, further afield are Lugo , with the Roman wall that still circles the old town. Ourense with its delightful river walks and hot springs and hot bath and the unbelievably diverse nature of the Ribeira Sacra.

The Galicia region

The Ribeira Sacra is around the canyons of he Rivers Sil and Miño. The heart of the Ribeira Sacra is where the two rivers meet. It is not far from Monforte or Orense. If the weather turns nasty one can always retreat to the hot springs of Orense or simply relax in the Casa de las Flores in Mer Sober.

The nature around us is simply outstanding. High plains cut by the rivers, the south facing side covered in famous wine. Amandi just around the corner is a famously sundrenched area and the menzia wines are held in high regard.

There are always some adegas (Bodegas) where the wine can be tasted and its served in all the local bars with and without certification of origin.

Visit Lugo with its complete roman wall. Walking on it gives a uniqie view of the old town.

Fancy a quick dip. Either 10 minutes to a sweetwater beach or just 1:30h to the coast with some beautiful sandy beaches.

Monforte de Lemos

Mer Sober near Monforte is a perfect start to explore rural Galicia. Nearby are Santiago, Orens, Pontevedra, Vigo and Lugo to name a few.

Santiago de Compostella, the end of the long walk, where you get the Compostella if you have walked at least 100Km is well woth a visit and the quaint old town is cool in summer.

Orense is vibrant town, home of Zarah and other famous brands, but also along the river Mino are numerous hot springs, some of the pools date back to before Roman times, A lot have been modernised and invite you to relax.

Lugo with the longest, intact, roman city wall and a partly restored old town is the most rural town of Galicia.

Going to Fonsagrada you go into the "wild west" or O'Courel with its high montains, the pass at Cebreiro where pilgims enter Galicia. You may see the foot prints of bears and wolfs which have resetteled in this ragged remote area.

“The quiet spot in rural Galicia”

Reviewed 3 Nov 2013

Great house with garden and in the mornings the balcony with its view just invited us to linger. The nearby nature is simply outstanding and the people ever so friendly. Food and wine in abundance, great value for money. Highly recommend this for a stay in "non typical" Spain.
