Location description from owner

The Canary Islands region

The island of Gran Canaria is located in the Atlantic Ocean, just 130 miles from the African coast. It is the third largest of the Canary Islands and offers lush forests, Sahara like dunes, mountains and volcanic landscapes. Gran Canaria also boasts incredibly beautiful coastlines and spectacular beaches. It boasts around 340 days of sunshine each year and is usually beautifully warm. The south is the most popular part of the island including the resort of Puerto de Mogn (a picturesque village also known as Little Venice), which is in our opinion the prettiest and most relaxing resort on the island. Gran Canaria has spectacular views and many rugged landscapes, well worth exploring.

Culture

The island boasts several interesting museums und culture centres, highlights of which are the recent Museo de la Ciencia y la Tecnologia (Science and Technology Museum) and the Casa de Coln (Christopher Columbus House) as well as the Centro Atlntico de Arte Moderno (Atlantic Centre of Modern Art) all of them are in the city of Las Palmas.

After the subjugation by the Spaniards, Gran Canaria Island became a famous port of call for travellers, and many of them settled with their families on this beautiful island, bringing with them their own cultures and traditions. As Gran Canarias society was always open to everything that came from beyond the seas, the island has enriched itself with visiting cultures, although at all times aiming to preserve its ancient traditions to keep its original identity alive. Due to its long history, this cosmopolitan island became a synonym for culture blends with a rich archaeological, architectural, ethnographic and artistic heritage difficult to find in other places of such small dimensions.

The 'Canarios'

The people of the island like to celebrate festivals, if of religious, folkloristic or cultural nature, and there is always something going on somewhere on the island. In the meantime a firm place on the islands agenda have internationally renowned festivals such as the International Film Festival of Las Palmas, the Festival de Msica de Canarias (Canaries Classic Music Festival) and the Festival de pera (Opera Festival). Other events like the WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) or the Festival de Teatro y Danza de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Theater and Dance Festival of Gran Canaria) bring still more influences of the international cultural panorama to this magnificent island.

The People of Gran Canaria

Long before the first European sailors arrived on the Canary Islands, all seven islands were inhabited. Guanches, guan (meaning 'man') and che (meaning white mountain referring to the snow-crowned Teide on Tenerife) in the native tongue, was the name given to those inhabitants. Guanches are believed to have arrived on the islands between the 5th and the 1st century B.C., probably from Africa. According to Spanish historical records, the Guanches were tall, strongly built, white-skinned, blue-eyed and blond-haired.

The Guanches were cave dwellers, which was a logical development with regard to the climate of the Canary Islands. A cave dwelling was the perfect solution for both summer and winter, keeping people cooler or warmer, and also for storage purposes.

Todays inhabitants of Gran Canaria are a proud, friendly and easygoing people, the majority of them being descendants of the Spanish conquerors and colonisers and assimilated Guanches. In general, they are open minded, willing to help and pleased to show visitors their culture and their island.

Almost 96 per cent of the inhabitants of the Canary Islands are Roman Catholics, who are very tradition-conscious, which can be witnessed on big religious feast days and particularly during the Semana Santa (Holy Week before Easter), when extensive celebrations take place all over the islands.

Golf in Gran Canaria

Ideal climatic conditions make Gran Canaria a perfect golfing destination, with the possibility of practising your favourite sport 365 days a year. An added bonus is that most of the golf courses on the island are new, which means youll find modern courses conceived with the most demanding players very much in mind.

There are currently 10 golf courses in Gran Canaria four are located in the north and six in the south each and every one built by the most prestigious of international golf-course designers.

Mogan

Puerto Mogan is quite special. Its set around a beautiful fishing harbour, alongside the small but vibrant local community. It's set in the valley, and has its own micro-climate, so warm weather is virtually guaranteed all year round, giving you pleasant sun-filled, relaxing days. We believe its the prettiest and most relaxing resort on the whole of Gran Canaria and is often referenced in guide books as being a really special place to visit.

Take a walk through the old town behind the harbour on the hillside; the pretty white-washed houses, fabulous restaurants and amazing shops and boutiques. Walk through the steps and maze of narrow paths and you'll find the homes to the vibrant local community. Walk up to the viewing belvedere for a bird’s eye panoramic view of the whole resort. You can take photos from up there, that will look like postcards.

You will feel like you are part of a secret club that knows and protects this resort from becoming over commercialised like many of the other spots on the island. The beach is lovely, the water is crisp and clear and the surrounding area is a hive of little bars and cafes.

Puerto de Mogán in the evenings is a place to stroll; or relax in the comfortable chairs of an open air terrace bar while slowly sipping your drink as the sun sets, watching the world go by.

A good local bus service operates from the areas immediately behind the port but car-hire is ideal if you want to explore the island at your leisure. Taxis are also readily available at the taxi rank next to the beach and trips to the local resorts are just minutes away. Off-road parking is available at the front of the building on a first come first served basis. Boat trips are available from the harbour too.

Local attractions in Puerto de Mogan include: A yellow submarine offering trips to the underwater world off-shore, boat trips to the beaches of Puerto Rico, Playa Del Ingles and Maspalomas. Deep sea fishing trips are also available. Nearby. The island boasts other attractions such as Water parks, Sioux City Western Theme Park and Palmitos Park providing a colourful and entertaining look at nature.

Puerto Mogan harbour also offers diving activities. The waters outside of this tranquil harbour have recently been designated a marine reserve and are popular for diving because of their calmness and transparent waters. With the existence of old shipwrecks just off the coast and the natural volcanic seabed, the marine life is varied and plentiful.

Fishing and yacht trips are also available. A glass-bottomed ferry trip is available to Puerto Rico and Arguineguin.

There is also a children's play area adjacent to the beach where the children can play safely. Numerous areas of Gran Canaria can be reached by boat, taxi or bus.

There are two beautiful golf courses within very close proximity. The prestigious 18 hole Salobre golf course is the largest of the two.

Mogan has many fabulous restaurants to choose from, serving a variety of foods from freshly caught fish, to the island's most celebrated pizza/steak restaurant.

All the attractions are easily accessible. We can arrange trips for you, or we can offer car rental so that you can make the journey there at your leisure. On Friday mornings, a little walk down from our holiday rental flat, there is a bustling street market in Puerto Mogan, stretching from the harbour through to the town centre, selling clothes, lace and various Canarian gifts. Our holiday apartment gives you the perfect base to do as much or as little as you would like on your sunshine break. The perfect relaxing holiday accommodation.

“Lovely apartment, great location.”

Reviewed 2 Nov 2015

We had a very enjoyable week at this apartment which is clean and comfortable and has everything we needed - especially the wi-fi for my 17 year old. The beach and harbour are just a few minutes away and there are plenty of bars, shops and restaurants. Transfers were arranged by Dawn the owner which were very good and we were met by Judy at the apartment who gave us useful information about the area etc. I was impressed by the prompt responses I received throughout the booking and I was confident it wouldn't disappoint - it didn't !

“Excellent spacious, convenient accommodation”

Reviewed 1 Dec 2014

Well equipped apartment with weekly cleanig as standard.Sunny and roomy balcony. Very close to shops, restaurants and all the harbour facilities. Car not necessary, bus terminus very close. The transfers from and to the Airport were well organised and timely. The pool area was excellent, and never busy during our stay. The constant pool depth was a plus for us. Traffic noise was sometimes a problem but never in the evening. We have booked for next year!

“Nice and quiet place, well located to visit Gran Canaria”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2014

The apartment and terrace were bigger than what we expected with a very well furnished kitchen. The swimming pool was well appreciated even if the beach is so close. Travelling with a coeliac child it was perfect to have the supermarket 5 minutes walk from the apartment with a lot of gluten free products ! And last but not least we have forgotten some clothes over there, and thanks to the prompt reaction of Dawn, the apartment's owner, the clothes are on the way back home.

“Everything you need in this well equipped apartment”

Reviewed 23 Aug 2014

We had a great week in this very well equipped and comfy apartment. We especially appreciated the wi-fi and UK TV stations. The rooftop pool is very warm and clean and was always quiet. Puerto de Mogan is a very pretty resort and much nicer than some of the more built-up resorts further along the coast. The beach, shops and restaurants are all a short walk away fro m the apartment and the bus station is just across the road. Dawn organised our taxis for us, which were very efficient and comfy. Puerto de Mogan is a great place for a relaxing week in the sun.

“Perfect- just the relaxation we were looking for”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2014

Westhill is a great appartment, perfectly situated for all aspects of puerto de mogan. Dawn is a pleasure to deal with, didn't hesitate to answer any queries as well as organusing our transfers which made our journeys seamless. mogan is a lovely resort, very clean, lovely beach and amazing harbour with great restaurants. Some evenings we stayed in and ate on the balcony- the appartment had everything we needed including a really quiet pool ( we only shared it with one other couple once! ) This time we just relaxed and apart from a mid week boat trip we didnt leave mogan...though a quick visit to puerto rico showed how peaceful and beautiful mogan is! Will definately return and have already recommended the accomodation and mogan! Thanks dawn!

“A lovely Apartment and resort!”

Reviewed 6 Feb 2014

We were really pleased. The apartment is lovely. It’s nice and big, plenty of space for the 4 of us. It is fully equipped with a decent cooker and a large fridge/freezer, real home from home comforts plus a big outside balcony to relax on. The roof-top pool is great, plenty of room up there to sunbathe. The apartment is positioned well, 5 mins from the beach and all the restaurants around the harbour. I like the fact there are no late disco bars, no-one trying to drag you into clubs, it’s just a chilled, relaxed place to be, perfect for our holiday. I’ll definitely go back. The agent Judy is really helpful too, a very nice English lady. Thanks to Dawn for organising.

“Nicest village we found on the isalnd”

Reviewed 28 Nov 2013

We had a great time in Puerto de Mogan. for our week's holiday. the apartment was ideal for our family of three, with my teenage son particularly happy about the wifi availability! Puerto de Mogan is a lovely village. We did a fair amount of travelling around the island in our hire car, and I have to say that we didn’t find anywhere else as nice at Mogan. Although we didn't use them, there were lot's of local buses buzzing around, so I wouldn't discount Mogan is you don't want to drive. As for the restaurants, let’s just say that I’ve been on a crash diet since I got back. Judy, the housekeeper, was lovely too.

“Huge apartment, balcony in sun all day, rooftop loungers and pool, could live there all year!”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2013

The service was excellent! Owner arranged transfers with friendly drivers, the English lady who looks after the apartment on behalf of the owner is extremely helpful, welcomed me in the middle of the night, provided milk and water ready for tea and coffee and went out of her way when I asked for help. The property is really well equipped, washing machine, English TV & DVD, stacks of pots and cooking things, you don't need to take anything - it is all there! There's windows in every room for fresh warm air, fans in the bedrooms and air conditioning, and so much space you will not be on top of each other; all the rooms are big including the bathroom! The balcony is big too, with an airer, sun loungers and large table with chairs. The beds are comfortably hard and the sofa and lounge chairs comfy and soft; not foam on board! The owner has gone to a lot of trouble to make the apartment home from home and thought of everything you might need as a family with lots of drawer and cupboard space and a safe. You have an apartment and an outer key to outside steps or a lift just along the corridor. Others have commented it is on the main road into Mogan, yes it is but I honestly would say you don't notice when sleeping in the sun or bathing in the pool! More importantly it means wide flat pavements to Mogan, a very short walk away, and the supermarket and bus station are 'just around the corner'. Even though there was plenty parking space I did not take a car for my 10 days stay, with the excellent bus service so close and regular boat trips to the other resorts. If you like to walk; just up the road going away from the village is another supermarket on the right, turn left at that roundabout, up a steep climb and you have plenty of long walks up and along the coast or into the local hills. My favourite was the pool on the roof, I had it to myself almost every day, being July I swam every afternoon, it's the length of a normal pool width and the apartment has blow up pool things if you like! July is hot but its quiet and not many British; weekends are busy with Spanish families but they're happy and fun. If you are thinking Mogan as your destination, then its fabulous, family orientated, safe, and quiet; its not for the clubbing crowd, but great friendly bars and restaurants a great beach with loungers and the usual water sport things out in the sea, gorgeous marina and working harbour so a fish lovers delight! As a lone female traveller it was the perfect destination; I did not get hassled or feel unsafe ever - all the restaurants, shops, cafes and bar staff were chatty and friendly. Brunch on the Marina after a long morning stroll - heaven! As for the apartment... I have already recommended it to all my friends, colleagues and family; I'd definitely stay there again and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

“Perfect holiday apartment & great location”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2013

The apartment we stayed in was just right for a holiday... well maintained, good facilities, spacious, and even a great balcony. Rooftop pool was great too. In addition just a great location (shops, beach, and centre of town is in very easy walking distance). Also there is a spot to park your car out front as well. For the money it was just right, and good weather was had as well which makes it even better. Only bad thing is we did not get one fish when we booked a fishing trip.

“Perfect Holiday Apartment”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2013

Easy to find, friendly key handover, clean/modern apartment, great location and view from balcony Mogan is a great port village offering beach, restaurants, bars, away from the hustle and bustle of the larger holiday resorts. Couldn’t ask for more 5 Stars
