Description

The Space

A beautiful country home, set in a spectacular quiet location. Great home for large get togethers, with ample space for relaxation and privacy. Each of the 7 bedrooms has their own en suite facilities and use of a gym and games room. The local village, a short five minute walk has all the basics you would need. The pubs are atmospheric and welcoming, often full of local colour. For sport out with walking and cycling there is a golf course and two tennis courts. For children there are three play parks including a boating lake and crazy golf. One note of caution for those with very small children, there is a small pond with a maximum depth of two foot, so adult supervision of small children whilst in the garden is necessary.

Guest Access

Guest will have access to all the rooms in the property. In addition to the living areas there is a games room, a gym, which will be used by the guests at their own risk. Children under the age of 18 are not permitted

The Scotland region

Eating in and around Moffat

There are a good few places cafes in Moffat, and the majority offer good, reasonably priced breakfasts and lunches. I would thoroughly recommend Jack and Rachels right at the beginning of the high street on the walk down into the village. Everything is cooked to order fresh and delicious, particularly the breakfasts and steak and onion served on ale buns. Cakes are all homemade on site.

Another place to eat from morning till late is Brodies. This is a more contemporary establishment, particularly good for eggs benedict for brunch (great hangover cure!) Brodie's also opens in the evening for Dinner, but reservation is recommended (phone number hidden). Costing around £20 - £25 for a starter and a main, with a licence and a cocktail menu.

The Italian restaurant Claudios (phone number hidden), has a good reputation for both traditional and contemporary Italian cuisine, with the added benefit of a takeaway service.

Another takeaway and sit in restaurant is the Indian Bombay Cuisine (phone number hidden) which has a mixed reputation, but I have always found the food reasonable.

Pubs

If its a nice day and you fancy sitting in the sunshine, take a drink in the garden at the back of the Moffat House Hotel, its pretty and the food is also good.

The stag seems to be the pub of choice for the locals. The Star is the narrowest pub in the world (allegedly!).

Out and about

For walkers;

There are many beautiful walks in and around Moffat. Directly behind the house the Beechwood woods provide a few easy walks that are signposted and allow great views over the town and the surrounding area.

The Devils Beef tub.

A ten minute drive away along the A701 towards Edinburgh, you will find The Devil's Beef Tub, (Marquis of Annandale's Beef-Tub, Beef-Stand, MacCleran's Loup) a deep, dramatic hollow in the hills north of Moffat. The name derives from its use by the Border Reivers, namely the Johnstone clan, whose enemies referred to them as "devils", to hide stolen cattle.

Grey Mares Tail

Best known for its magnificent waterfall – the fifth highest in the UK – and uniquely dramatic scenery, Grey Mare's Tail is a superb example of a hanging valley. A little f further on takes you to St Marys loch , a great spot on a sunny day, with refreshments available from the cafe on the main road or the well known and historic Tibbie Shiels (website hidden) Forrest

Ae Forest is the perfect place to visit, whether you want to relax with a picnic beside the river, watch woodland wildlife, stroll through the trees or burn off some serious energy on horseback or on the superb mountain bike trails.

The waymarked routes include gentle rambles beside the sparkling Water of Ae as well as longer hikes into the hills with wonderful (website hidden) Forest lies close to Ae village, just off the A701 Moffat to Dumfries.

Sweetheart Abbey 8 miles south of Dumfries, near to the Nith in south-west Scotland, was a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1275 by Dervorguilla of Galloway, daughter of Alan, Lord of Galloway, in memory of her husband John de Balliol. His embalmed heart, in a casket of ivory and silver, was buried alongside her when she died; the monks at the Abbey then renamed the Abbey in tribute to her.
