Very Good

“Quite a nice apartment, but BEWARE!”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2016

For a special treat, my wife and I took our son to Modena for his 30th birthday, visited Ferrari, saw Parmesan cheese and Balsamic vinegar being made and ate at some nice restaurants – and it all should been great. Instead it wound up falling rather short of the mark – due to the apartment. This is quite a well appointed flat. The furnishings are very nice and the accommodation is fine. It’s about average for the money… but, there are a couple of things to be aware of. 1. One of the bathrooms has a ‘macerator’ toilet. These are notoriously unreliable things (Google it and see). They are prone to blocking up if anything goes down the toilet that hasn’t come out of you first. When we were there it stopped working. We reported it and ended up with 2 separate plumbers coming out to fix it – we thought we’d do the decent thing and waited in for them too. The second one found a used Tampon blocking the toilet. We can absolutely guarantee with 100% certainty that it was not ours, yet when we got home the owner claimed our EUR 200 deposit for ‘damaging the toilet’ which was wholly untrue – and despite providing plenty of evidence to HolidayLettings that we couldn’t have caused it, they released our deposit – and then HL washed their hands of the whole thing and have been less than useless since. In 30+ degree temperatures, you can imagine how it smelled when the foul drain had been opened on 2 occasions and the contents dragged out. We’re still waiting for an apology on that one. I can understand the owner being upset about getting a hefty plumbers bill, but none of our party use Tampons, so we should not have been penalised. It was easy enough to disprove the owners claim, yet HL failed to consider my evidence and just sided with the owner. 2. Parking. During our stay there we had some issues with parking. The web page used to offer parking as one of the amenities… but since we were there this has been removed. DON’T PARK ANYWHERE NEAR THE APARTMENT. It is within a limited access zone (ZTL), but that’s not immediately obvious unless you’re looking out for it, as the signs are small and well hidden. There’s a hefty fine for each time you enter the ZTL. This is information that would have been useful before we arrived. I asked the owner about parking on 2 separate occasions and it wasn’t mentioned. Also, the housekeeper who showed us round on arrival said it was OK to park outside on the street. There is nothing in the information folder in the apartment either. During our stay we corresponded several times with the owner about the parking – but she kept saying ‘It’s on the website’ – which it wasn’t. We contacted the parking authorities and they said that a temporary pass could be arranged, but she didn’t sort one out for us. We have since found that she also advertises on Air BnB, and there is lots of information on there about parking – but unfortunately none on HL. The nearest public parking (if you can get on it, as it’s normally very busy) is about 3-4 blocks away and will cost you about EUR 15 per day to park. Other than that, all was OK, but by the time you factor in EUR 200 for the deposit and 100+ Euro for parking, we could have rented somewhere better with parking. And that’s before we add on all the fines that have yet to receive for driving into the ZTL. All it would have taken was a comment in an email that we shouldn’t enter the ZTL. Not too much to expect. So normally, I would probably have said this was a nice place and given it 4/5 stars, but as it rather spoilt the whole holiday in many ways, it’s getting 1 (I couldn’t give none).
