Location description from owner

Southern Province region

Its unlikely that you will get bored in Mirissa but if you need to explore the surroundings then here are a few options and places to see.

Heading back in the direction of Colombo you will find the small fishing town and railway hub of Welligama . Its a 15 minutes bus ride ( 4 KM ) and getting lost in the back streets of this small market town can be fun . Take a stroll along the sea front and watch the fishermen dragging their boats up on shore or selling their fish in their small shops. The is a bank here, some small internet shops and lots of places to buy small local items ideal for gifts.

The Port of Galle ( Galla ) is about another 30 minutes further on towards Colombo . If this is your main destination be sure to get a bus with a seat available or you will be standing all the way with a million other people.

Galle has one of the most beautiful old Dutch / Portugese forts in all of South East Asia. It is a port town and there is a thriving neighbourhood with the fort walls . Once inside you can walk around the old fort and get lost amongst all the small streets. Grab something to eat or quench your thirst with a orange coloured King Coconut and sit on the old walls and look out over the ocean.

Galle is famous for its lace and you will not get more than 100 M before some old lady tries to sell you some. Spend an hour or so wandering around the old Dutch Church in the heat of the day and read some of the old tombstones from 200 year ago.

The Fort is NEVER closed and there is NEVER and entrance fee to get in. It is a vibrant working part of the city and access to it is just across from the railway and the bus station. Galle is known for its creative Touts so beware of people who befriend you as they will eventually just happen to mention that they or a friend can get you a great deal on some gems . Its also not uncommon to be approached by someone who claims to be a Waiter in the restaurant in the Hotel you are staying at . They are just trying to make a living and their tactics and stories can be quire amusing. just tell them politely you are not interested and they usually disappear , I did say usually

Heading in the direction away from Colombo and about 12 KM down the road from Mirissa is the bustling town of Matara. This is the final stop on the Train from Colombo and a major bus destination hub for the whole of the Southern Provence . It is from here that you can get back to Colombo or take a bus up to Ella and the Hill Country.

Matara also has its own Fort tucked away in a quiet corner of the town close to the main Bus Station. It is not as grand as the one in Galle , but it is still nice to spend a few hours walking around inside it .

Just after the Cricket Grounds is the extremely old Dutch Star Fort . This place dates back to 1600 and it is still possible to walk around inside it and with only a little bit of imagination its possible to transport yourself back in time and put yourselves in the shoes of one of the young soldiers stationed here from Holland.

Another 8 or so KM up the road is Dondra and this place is geographically the most Southern tip of Sri Lanka and the Indian Sub Continent . There is functioning lighthouse there and definitely its worth a trip to just to say you were there. Ask for details and directions at your guest house or hire a minivan or Tuk Tuk to take you there .

Mirissa and its breathtaking sandy beach pretty much transforms your dreams and visions of a tropical paradise into an everyday reality.

Located close to the Southern tip of the Island of Sri Lanka and only about 200 km from the Equator, this secluded crescent shaped beach is the perfect place to sit back, relax and forget about all the hussle and bussle of your other life that’s a million miles away.

This small sandy tropical beach boasts some of Sri Lanka’s best and most stunning sunsets and sunrises.
All the Guest Houses in Mirissa are set back from the actual beach giving you the impression that you are on a deserted palm fringed island. Every now and again the silence is broken by the sound of a coconut falling on the sand or a chilled beer being opened by someone further up the beach.

Mirissa Beach is rapidly becoming a popular Surfer hangout during the months of November to March when it’s the rainy season on the East coast.

Whale watching in Mirissa

Word has reaches us that many people visiting Sri Lanka have been taking side trip to Mirissa to do some Whale and Dolphin watching . A Company based in Mirissa reports to be able to introduce you to Spinner, Striped, Bottlenose and Spotted Dolphins.
Large whales are also seen in the waters off Mirissa. I suspect everything is seasonal so its best to give them a call and see what they have to offer. There are a few companies to choose from so spend a few minutes deciding before you commit to a whale watching in Mirissa trip.

If you are an early riser , now by early we mean 6am , why not take a short walk to Mirissa Port to see the fish being unloaded from the boats and trawlers.

This is ground zero for the local fishing community where people come from all over the South of the country to buy. It is not unusual to see large sharks being hauled off boats that have just come back from a 2 week excursion to the water close to the Maldives.

You will see people haggling and arguing over the price of some of the strangest or most valuable seafood creatures available in this region. Bring a camera to capture the mayhem but be careful where you point it. It’s a place of intense business and the locals are not there to pose for the tourists.

“The perfect place for a relaxing family holiday”

Reviewed 13 Jan 2016

We have just returned from a fantastic week's stay at Daisy Lanka with our children aged 14,11 and 7 year old twins. From beginning to end we were looked after and everything had been so well arranged by owners Tracy and Andy. The villa itself was lovely and had everything we could possible need. Mahesh the Housekeeper met us with a warm welcome and looked after us impeccably during our stay, his ices coffees, juices and cocktails were top notch! Prabod the chef was amazing - his food was fresh, delicious and cooked to perfection, there was no need to go out for dinner at all! The garden and pool area were great and very private. It was lovely to relax in the Ambalama where there was plenty of room for all of us to sit comfortably. We also had breakfast here which was a great way to start the day. The beach was a 10 minute walk where there were a choice of Beach cafes for drinks and food but the beach whilst popular did not feel overcrowded. The Mirissa Eye restaurant was our usual base each day and it was great to watch the world go by and watch the children have fun in the waves (the waves/current were sometimes very powerful so you have to be especially careful with smaller children). We also went Whale Watching and can recommend Raja and the Whale who were a very professional operator adhering to international whale watching regulations. Shathika the guest relations manager at Daisy Lanka booked this for us along with any other excursion we wanted to do. It is also worth a trip to historic Galle for a wander around the working fort, in and around the lanes. There are many excellent restaurants to eat at the now converted Dutch Hospital. Overall a most relaxing family holiday which suited all of our children and the parents too! Thank you to Andy and Tracy and their amazing staff, we hope to one day return to Daisy Lanka.

Thanks for writing a review. We work hard to make sure that we cover all aspects of your holiday at Daisy Lanka and have a great team working with us. We look forward to welcoming you back soon :-D

“Just lovely”

We had the perfect start to our 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka by spending 5 nights at Daisy Lanka.Lots of useful information from Andy and Tracy before we arrived. It was such a treat to have Prabod(fabulous chef) and Mahesh(looked after us really well-especially the cocktails!) as well as Chathu who arranged a trip to Galle and whale watching so we could really make the most of our stay. The villa is lovely-comfortable and well equipped with a great pool and convenient location near the beach.Mirissa was a great choice for us-we particularly enjoyed the body boarding.

“Wonderful villa, that does exactly as described”

We had a super two weeks at Daisy Lanka. Perfect pool for entertaining kids, garden for lazing and relaxing in, and really friendly and attentive staff. All of this just a short walk from the beach and the hub of restauarnts etc. Owners ensured we were fully informed and questions answered before arrival. All in all a perfect find.

“Wow! Just Wow!”

I was extremely lucky to find and stay at this little gem! Everything about the place is magical .. from the amazing cocktails (Mahesh would appear as if by magic with some amazing delights) to the fireflies that come out at night to make you believe you really are in paradise. The owners Tracy and Andy went above and beyond all expectations. They didn't just take the money and leave me to my own devices. They helped me organise transport from the airport, and their recommendations of possible trips were spot on. Without their help I wouldn't have experienced the true beauty of Sri Lanka and seen the wonder of such a truly amazing place. The accommodation was beyond five stars and the staff just added to the experience. I really felt like royalty and was treated as such. Having somebody cook your menu for you after such a hard day on the beach was the icing on the cake. The rooms were perfect and the bedding was softer than my own at home. My best recommendation is that I have booked again to go already and would have booked for the New Year 2016 except, someone else who has found this little gem, got there before me!! I would recommend this to anyone wanting to really feel that they have left the world behind and found paradise in its true sense.

“5 star villa!”

Our stay at Daisy Lanka was a family holiday for three couples and could not have been more perfect. We were greeted with a welcome drink and such smiles from the team which were to continue for the rest of our stay. They went above & beyond to ensure we had s great stay, from delicious meals & a cooking class, cocktail making and a tuk tuk trip to a favourite tailor, everything was just great. The villa has everything you could possibly need and the rooms are at a hotel standard. Tracy & Andy were so helpful in the lead up, with an abundance of information & being so helpful by organising sightseeing options & a seafood meal on the beach. We stayed three nights as part of a tour of Sri Lanka and our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. We will definitely return!

“Lovely haven in the middle of Mirissa”

We stayed at Daisy Lanka last february for 5 nights with another couple and had a lovely time. Because it belongs to a family, one room is substantially larger and more luxurious than the others (master bedroom) and we were lucky enough to get it! Something to bear in mind if you are friends rather than a family. It was nicely appointed with a lovely garden and pool and an easy walk to the lovely beach. It is fully staffed so you are well looked after but be aware they are always around if you are wanting your own privacy.

We had a fantastic 2 weeks at Daisy Lanka! The villa is lovely and the staff couldn't do enough for us. When we arrived we were greeted with such warmth and friendliness from Chathu, Mahesh and Probada. Chathu visited us on several occasions during our stay, giving us hints and tips of places to visit and arranged a couple of trips for us. Mahesh is a wonderful housekeeper and was constantly on hand offering us drinks - we would highly recommend the banana daiquiri's, they're gorgeous!!! Probada cooked us some delicious dishes thoughout our stay, so good in fact that we only ate out only once during the whole two weeks. He also kindly allowed us to watch (and even help out) when cooking dinner and I've brought home some wonderful recipe ideas….I think we tried everything on the menu and it was all first class cuisine. The villa itself is simply stunning, it is in effect 3 self contained suites all very stylishly laid out. There is a pleasant living space and a large modern kitchen with a seating area. All set in lovely landscaped gardens, with pool and further outside eating area, (but still can't say or spell the name of it!) The owners even very kindly liaised with us prior to the holiday to arrange (with the help of Chathu) the christening of our daughter in Galle. They contacted the minister in All Saints Church Galle and arranged everything with him on our behalf, dozens of emails, telephone calls etc - you don't get this kind of service though a travel company!! - Thanks once again Andy & Tracey for putting the icing on the cake for an incredible holiday. Here is another quick example of the level of service that went above and beyond - when we arrived at Columbo our luggage didn't, Chathu very kindly tracked it down and even went to the airport in person (over 2 hours away) to retrieve the bags for us. All in all we had a truly wonderful holiday at Daisy Lanka, we didn't realise we could get this standard of accommodation and level of service for such a reasonable price. If we had paid double the amount we had to hire the villa we would still have thought it to be extremely good value!! Mirissa beach is a few minutes walk away, and is simply stunning. There are also plenty of excellent and good value bars and restaurants on the beach. 'Mirissa Eye' is a great place to watch the sun go down on the beach with a pint of local beer at £1 or less at happy hour - perfect! We have had holidays all around the world, Europe, America, Thailand, but this one was the best by far. Beautiful country, amazing 5 star accommodation, and a truly astonishing level of service, what more can you want in a holiday?! we will be back there soon thats for certain..

“Great stay”

We had a fantastic stay at Daisy Lanka. The house is beautiful and bedrooms very comfortable. The pool is gorgeous and great for lying out on a lazy day. Most of all the staff make the stay, cooking fabulous meals at your request and preparing refreshing drinks all day long. Only downside was the prevelance bugs in the garden, particularly around dusk- but you can't have everything!

“Paradise, fantastic accomodation, staff and a stones throw from the beach”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2013

From the moment the gates opened we felt at home, the staff were all smiles and nothing was too much trouble. The villa has been sympathetically renovated to a very high standard with modern facilities such as wet room showers and air conditioning. The garden is a lovely place to chill with an iced coffee (or something stronger) either lounging under the Ambalama enjoying the sun or cooling off in the pool. The food is nothing short of amazing, Proboda (The Chef) is young man but way beyond his age in his ability to put superb food in front of you. Every meal was a delight. Mahesh (The House Boy)is always polite with nothing too much trouble ensuring the accommodation is always a pleasant place to be. Gamini looks after the premises at night and his son Hashan is always readily available with his Tuk Tuk should you need a taxi Finally, Chathu is there every morning to check that everything is in place for your holiday to exceed expectations. From a sight seeing trip to talking about Sri Lankan culture. I left thinking "When can I go back"

“Daisy Lanka was an amazing villa with fantastic staff”

Reviewed 16 Apr 2013

We were very happy with Daisy Lanka which was a very well appointed and clean villa with an immaculate garden and pool area. The staff were there to greet us and on hand whenever we needed them. Chathu spoke very good English and was there if we needed any help. She was very caring when I was taken ill and accompanied me to the doctor. Proboda cooked us some wonderful food which meant we ate several times for lunch and evening at the villa. Mahesh was also very handy in the kitchen as well as being a very caring person and looking after our needs. Also we felt safe at night as Gamini kept watch...he also provided a very careful tuk tuk drive! Mirissa beach was beautiful as one of my sons said "he has visited some amazing places and he rates it one of the best!". It was very clean and tidy whilst providing plenty of bars to eat at but without destroying the natural beauty. It was a genuine 5 minute walk from the villa. Not forgetting the owners Andy & Tracy who were extremely helpful and provided us with any information we needed before we left home and during our stay...Thankyou I would highly recommend a stay at this beatiful place and hope some day to return
