Casa sul Monte is an imposing 200-year-old traditionally built stone house, nestled high in the forest-covered hills of central Umbria. The recently completed rebuild and refurbishment of the ground floor stables, wood store and cellars has created two beautiful, airy and spacious apartments, each furnished and equipped to very high standards in a contemporary style.
'Ulivi' is the larger of the two apartments and is generously proportioned with two excellent sized bedrooms (one double and one twin) and an impressive main living room and dining area in what used to be the main stables. In one corner of this living area is a fully equipped modern kitchen with top of the range equipment including dish-washer, fridge-freezer, electric oven and hob, ecc. High quality fittings and finishes have been used throughout as they have in the luxury bathroom, which in this apartment includes a large walk-in shower area. In addition to the bedrooms there is a double bed-settee in the main living room in addition to ample lounge seating.
Unique to this property is its wonderful location. 520 meters (1,700 feet) above sea level Casa sul Monte (House on the Hill) is surrounded by indigenous, primarily oak, forests with amazing views east over the Tiber valley to the Apennine ranges in the distance. Sunrises are particularly spectacular and the clear air ensures deep blue skies and wonderful star-filled skies at night.
Long walks through these forests will delight with the number and variety of butterflies, flowers, mushrooms and wildlife that can be found, although good shoes and a strong stick are essential if wandering off the designated pathways. On early morning or evening drives you might encounter badgers, porcupines, hares, red squirrels, deer, pheasants, partridges and many other fauna including wild boar, for which this area is renowned and which can often be heard, and sometimes seen, foraging at night for walnuts, acorns and black truffles.
Although surrounded by woods Casa sul Monte is actually just on the outskirts of the small village of San Vito in Monte making us and our guests a very welcome part of the local community. A few minutes walk on a warm summer evening will bring you to the local square where many of the villagers sit out to chat through the events of the day and, if you wish, will happily give you plenty of opportunity to try out your Italian vocabulary. The local restaurant/bar, 'Il Piccolo Mondo'. provides a natural hub to the village and is a favourite of ours for excellent home cooked local fare, fresh pasta and brilliant desserts as well as the occasional cold evening beer, espresso coffee or shot of grappa - a real must for anyone staying at Casa sul Monte!

The Umbria region
At 520 m above sea level 'Casa sul Monte' (House on the Hill) sits high in the hills of central Umbria with spectacular views over the Tiber valley to the Apennine ranges beyond. Surrounded by thousands of hectares of natural forests our home is perfectly located for seemingly endless walks through the spectacular and dramatic landscape of this region while providing an ideal base from which to visit some of Italy's most beautiful medieval cities such as Perugia, Orvieto, Assisi, Todi, Norcia and Gubbio - each less than one hour's drive away.
Extending journey times to between 2 and 3 hours brings Rome, Florence, San Gimignano and Siena well within reach for those wanting to visit the unique Renaissance heritage of Tuscany or the historic monuments of the ancient Roman Empire. For days when longer drives don't appeal there are dozens of smaller villages, towns and hamlets in this region, each offering unique opportunities to wander unhurried through quiet cobbled streets to find the local Bar for mid-morning refreshment or a friendly Trattoria for a simple lunch of local fare.
Surprisingly, although surrounded by forest-covered hills, 'Casa sul Monte' also provides the opportunity to experience first hand the day-to-day life in San Vito in Monte, a small rural community of central Umbria. A few minutes drive and 12 kilometres from San Vito in Monte is San Venanzo, our nearest village with a bank and ATM; a Post Office; three bars; a couple of small supermarkets; pharmacy; fresh pizzeria and bakery; news agent, stationer and tobacconist as well as the local general store, petrol station, hairdresser, etc. San Venanzo is also where the Doctor's surgery and Police Station can be found.
Interestingly, San Venanzo is located on the edge of a long-extinct volcano and a specialist museum, visitor centre and related open air park can be visited by appointment and for a small fee throughout the year. Offering visitors a look at its volcanic craters and long-cold lava flows the 'Parco Vulcanologico di San Venanzo' is also known for the rarity of some of the rocks and minerals that lie in its territory, the best known being undoubtedly 'Venanzite'.
Tearing yourself away from this unique geology and rural charm of San Venanzo our nearest town is Marsciano, a further 15 kilometres down into the Tiber valley and 25 minutes from Casa sul Monte. Marsciano is a well established town with an excellent range and variety of shops and supermarkets, a weekly market, several banks, bars, restaurants, petrol stations and a couple of excellent wine cooperatives where a good selection of local wines can be bought already bottled or by the litre in petrol-pump style dispensers to fill your own containers!
To see and experience first-hand where and how these Umbrian grapes are grown, harvested and processed many local wineries offer tours and wine tastings, several of these located within an hour's drive of Casa sul Monte. For those particularly interested in the rustic rural cuisine of central Umbria there are many weeklong food festivals throughout the year. Each of these 'Sagre' is based on one or more specialist foods such as wild boar, black truffles, onions, snails, cured meats, strawberries, flat breads, mushrooms, etc. and all foods prepared by local villagers to age-old recipes. A traditional menu at a fixed price, including beverages and live entertainment, ensures large crowds and long queues but creates an unforgettable experience and great opportunity to share your meal with tourists and locals alike.
Another 'Must Do' when staying in the region is to visit Deruta where the world-renowned hand painted pottery is famous for its wide variety of traditional and modern styles, complexity of designs and intensity of colours on items ranging from ornate decorative plaques to table-tops, dinner plates to massive urns, serving platters to wall tiles. Deruta is just 30 minutes drive from Casa sul Monte.
