The England region

The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a stunning landscape of open heather moors, dramatic dales, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, close-knit communities, glorious waterfalls, fantastic birds, colourful hay meadows, stone-built villages, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past, distinctive plants and much more. As well as being an AONB the North Pennines is also a European and Global Geopark.

Middleton in Teesdale

Teesdale is the most southerly of the Durham Dales. The white farmhouses and barns of The Raby Estate are a distinctive element in the landscape of Upper Teesdale.Middleton in Teesdale is the 'capital' of the upper dale with all the amenities one would expect from a historic market town. There are walks on the Teesdale Way, Pennine Way, The Tees railway path and many others from the door of West Pasture cottage. Cycling around the dale is also very popular. Upper Teesdale is home to some of Britain's rarest wildlife and grassland habitats and England's biggest waterfall - High Force. Other local attractions include the magnificent Bowes museum, Raby Castle, Egglestone Hall Gardens. The local reservoirs and rivers are renowned for the quality of their fishing and day passes can be bought from the Grassholme reservoir visitor centre a few hundred yards from the cottage.
