Description

Mill Cottage is comfortably furnished, cosy and characterful, with a mixture of antiques and modern furniture.

Originally the Miller's home, a charming wisteria covered, 2 storey stone building which sits on the banks of the river Gelise surrounded by lush Gascony farmland. A large garden encircles the property and the river runs through it, meandering around an adjoining field, ideal for picnics and fishing from the river bank. It is the ideal place for a quiet, secluded, tranquil holiday, lounging in the south facing garden, gently exploring the surrounding countryside or rowing along the river. Kyaks are rentable in the village - you can shoot the rapids going over the weir and travel on down the river, exploring fairly wild countryside - kingfishers, cormorants, egrets, duck and moor-hen plus many more species live along the riverbanks and wild boar and deer roam the adjacent woodland.

The entrance to the cottage from the south facing lawns leads into a 'summer kitchen' area, with 2nd fridge, washing machine, sink etc and a downstairs shower room and w.c. The main accommodation is on the first floor and comprises a fully equipped modern kitchen, and a separate dining area, both with views of the river; there is a comfortable sittingroom and a twin bedded room both with views over adjoining farmland;down two steps leads to a bathroom with bath and shower and w.c plus a separate w.c; there are two bedrooms one single bedded room and one double bedded room, both with views over open farmland. The cottage is furnished tastfully and comfortably with both modern and antique furniture and paintings. The beds are made up with 100% cotton sheets and you can choose either blankets or duvet; Towels are provided including some beach towels; linen change once a week. The kitchen has modern equipment and is stocked with a selection of basic provisions ready for your arrival - tea, coffee, milk, sugar ++ etc.

Loungers are provided and there is an outside dining table and chairs, sheltered from the sun by parasols.

The village of Mezin, one of the prettiest in the area, is only 1.5 miles away, offering a variety of restaurants and shops and a busy weekly market on Sunday morning. There are tennis courts and a heated swimming pool. Further afield the area offers many activities and the cottage is ideally placed for sightseeing in the numerous medieval towns in both the Gers and the Lot et Garonne; and for enjoying local events; fetes, festivals and nocturnal 'supper' markets.

We live in the old Mill which sits astride the river behind the cottage. Although in the country the property is not remote or lonely.

An interesting footpath across the fields to the village takes approx 40mins. it is part of the pilgrim route to Compostelle.

Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

Gascony the most southerly part of Aquitaine/Lot et Garonne a large wine growing and farming region in south west France, famous for its foie gras, fresh produce, wine and armagnac, rolling hills and dense woodland with ancient medieval fortified villages and towns, against a wonderful back-drop of the often snowy Pyrenees. On the border of 3 Departments, surrounded by interesting places to visit in the Lot and Garonne the Gers and the Lannes

Unesco world heritage sites, Bordeaux and St Emillion are a day trip away

Mezin

Mezin is a small fortified village on a hill top, with the river Gelise running through the valley. Mill Cottage is 1.5 miles from the village. There is a very lively weekly market held under the arches in the village square on a Sunday morning and a farmers market on Thursday morning. Throughout the summer there is a weekly evening 'picnic market', which seems to be a great meeting place for the locals (English and French) Music/entertainment is provided and you buy freshly cooked/barbecued local food to consume picnic style on seating provided in the village square.

The village has a variety of small shops and restaurants/cafes, bank, postoffice and swimming pool . The centre of the village has a large church in which concerts and recitals are held from time to time throughout the year. From the medieval ramparts on a clear day the Pyrenees can be seen, the sun glistening on snowy peaks.

Nerac our nearest town is 9 miles away. The river Baise runs through Nerac and trips both up and down the river are available. Nerac has a luxury outdoor swimming area styled after Roman Baths as well as an indoor pool and tennis courts. There are some lovely walks alongside the river and (French) Henry IV's chateau in the middle of town is both pretty and interesting. Condom also offers boat trips on the river Baise, there is a very interesting church, statues of the 3 musketeers and armagnac warehouses to visit and sample - approx 12 miles away. Villa Gallo-Romaine de Seviac is a very well preserved archaeological site of a luxurious villa from the late Roman Empire, open to the public from March to November.

Some of the ancient villages in the Lannes are certainly worth a visit, an area where before the forests were planted, the local shepherds tended their sheep walking about on stilts. Cap Cauderoue activity centre in the forest, is about 5 miles away, offers acrobatic tree climbing, canoeing, riding, archery and woodland orientation.

There are many and varied styles of restaurants in town and the surrounding countryside and the local delicacies must be sampled - foie gras, magret de canard, salad de gesier and of course the inexpensive but delicious local wines and the famous armagnac.

Visit the local chateaux and vinyards, tasting the fine wines and armagnac is a pleasant pastime!

Visitors to this area will find a warm welcome from the locals who enjoy sharing their history and their enthusiasm for wine and food.

Spring arrives early, we enjoy outdoor living from, as early as March. June is a wonderful month, and in July and August, the main holiday season comes alive with fetes and festivals, picnics and concerts.

September and October are less hot, ideal for wandering the countryside on foot, bicycle or car, no traffic, no noise.
