Leaving Chania behind and setting off on the road towards the Omalos plateau you soon pass beyond the orange groves and with the White Mountains ahead, take the turning upwards from the village of Fournes following signs to the Therisso Gorge (several tavernas and an interesting little museum). The green mountainsides ahead will already begin to cast their spell as the road follows the valley. Slowly gaining height all the way until you reach the lovely village of Meskla where, in the whole of Crete, it would be difficult to find views that would better those found at journeys end (of only 25 mins in real terms) and the entrance to this lovely recently finished Villa and its blue, salt water, pool.

Set on the hillside and looking down over the roofs of the village below the villa has been designed in a topsy-turvy way which makes perfect sense, with the living area and its balcony with unsurpassed views on the first floor. On the ground floor there's a twin and single bedroom which share a bathroom whilst the master double bedroom has a small ensuite shower and W.C. All three bedrooms each have a small balcony to step onto and take in the views.

Back to first floor level, the spacious open plan living area is decorated in typical Cretan style with sofas arranged around an open fireplace and TV and a kitchen fitted with all modern facilities at one end. Three sets of French doors connect the living area with the balcony which runs the full length of the first floor. Outstanding views constantly change as the sun moves across the valley and eventually dips, as lights are simultaneously flicked on in homes on the hillsides opposite and stars appear in the night sky.

Outside, a lovely shady patio is furnished for dining, conveniently close to the BBQ area and the lovely salt water pool set amongst sun terraces will be particularly refreshing after a day spent exploring the Cretan countryside.

The village taverna, down by a dry riverbed and shaded from the baking sun by tall leafy trees is a relatively simple affair, with nevertheless a good choice of grilled meats and of course, whatever has been cooked in the pot that day. Sitting under the shade of the trees and soaking up the slower pace of life, it's easy to feel like part of the village and in no time you'll probably wish you could stay forever and join the growing numbers of expats who have made their home in this 'away from it all' village, that's still only 20 minutes from the north coast.

Location description from manager

The Chania Prefecture region

Just 25mins drive inland from Chania, this lovely mountainous village follows the river flowing between dramatically rising hills. Part of the village is on the hillside whilst the centre has a lovely taverna, cafe and beautiful twin tower church.

From Meskla it is easy to go further inland towards the picturesque villages of Zourva and Therisso. whilst in the other direction head towards Fournes which is known for its orange groves.

A few houses are dotted along the hillside above the centre of the village and the olive groves terrace down its sides.
