"One of the best places we've been to. With 11 people in our party with a range of young to grandparents, there was/is something for everyone. The children had so much freedom that they can't have at home going to the shops and beach by themselves, and lots of places of interest within easy driving distance. We all loved the house and have already started planning a future trip here." Clent clan, Aug 2013

"What a fantastic place - both Le Pin Sable and Merville. All had a great time, went to Honfleur, Deauville, Merville Battery, Pegasus Bridge, Mont St Michel and of course the beach, and all in one week! Would love to come back again, this time for longer but all in all it has been a fantastic adventure and think we might need to get a sandpit for our gardens. Merci beaucoup." Peacocks/Queens, Aug 2013

"Have had a wonderful holiday at Le Pin Sable! We have enjoyed house and garden. It is great to be in walking distance to the beach and the shops! Kids loved the beach, park and mini-golf. We also enjoyed the day trip to Honfleur/Deauville, another to Lisieux/Crevecoeur Castle and Beuvron en Auge. We are sad to leave but hope to be back soon! The house is well equipped and all our dealings with Sjoukje, Joanna and Nathalie have been so friendly and welcoming! :-)" Bentons, Jul 2013

Location description from owner

The Basse-Normandie region

Normandy is a beautiful region with wide, golden sandy beaches and gentle rolling hills inland. Famous for its Camembert and cider, Normandy offers many gastronomic delights and in particular, the fiery apple liqueur which is named for the Calvados region. Sea food lovers will be thrilled with the fresh fish and shellfish which is available everywhere. Climate-wise the region is similar to Cornwall, with a light breeze and good amounts of sunshine during the summer months. Winters are mild and wet and a walk on the beach in December is guaranteed to blow the cobwebs away!

The area is steeped in history, from William the Conqueror's birthplace in Falaise (50 mins), his Abbaye des Hommes and Abbaye des Dames, built by his wife Mathilde in Caen (20 mins), to the famous tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings in the mediaeval town of Bayeux (40 mins). The mediaeval chateau at Crevecoeur (30 mins) puts on jousting tournaments which are great fun for all the family. In Merville you will find La Redoute (10 min walk), a Napoleonic fort built by Vauban to protect the coast from invasion by the English and further afield, the ancient port of Honfleur (1 hr), one of the Cinque Ports, reflects the importance of sea trade to the area's historical development. Enjoy a family day out at the races at Deauville (40 mins) or simply wander the streets and shop in places such as Dior or Hermes. The beach at Deauville is also worth a visit with its famous boardwalk and beach huts.

The impact of the D-Day landings which took place on June 6th, 1944 can be seen everywhere and Le Pin Sable gives easy access to key sites such as the Pegasus Bridge (15 mins), the Mulberry harbour at Arromanches (35 mins), Port en Bessin and Omaha Beach (50 mins). The American cemetery just above Omaha beach has an excellent museum which is free and is particularly moving. If you see nothing else on your visit here, see this.

Merville-Franceville-Plage

Every Thursday through the summer there is a large market in the village with fresh produce including cheeses, sausage/dried meats, fresh fish and fantastic fresh herbs and soft fruits. The market continues through the winter season although reduced in size. All the fresh food stalls are still there. On the last Sunday of each month through the summer there is a huge brocante market where you can pick up anything, from a WWII helmet complete with bullet hole, to antique coffee grinders.

For children, there is mini-golf, sailing school (hobie cats, windsurfing, kayaking - 5 min drive) , swimming lessons, archery and various activities organised by the local tourist office. We can arrange prior booking for these.

Information on organised activities, including firework celebrations (14th July, 15 August), live music, and nature walks, can be obtained from the tourist office in the village. For an exciting day out Festyland provides fairground rides and entertainment about 25 mins drive away. In nearby Cabourg there is a pony club for riding lessons and hacks.

For more adventurous watersports enthusiasts there is kitesurfing (15 min walk) and wake boarding (10 min drive). Golfers can play in Le Home Varaville and Cabourg or venture further afield to Deauville and Omaha Beach. Bird watchers can enjoy the nature reserve at Sallenelles (5 min drive) and book to watch birds at La Maison des Marais, a private reserve in the middle of the marshes (20 mins).

The Merville Battery (10 mins walk) recreates one of the first battles on 6th June 1944 as paratroopers fought to neutralise the guns trained on Sword Beach prior to the landings. 10 mins drive away are the Pegasus Bridge which has an excellent museum and Ranville Cemetery which is mainly British soldiers.

You can, of course, just put your feet up and enjoy the house and garden! With plenty of space, the large sandpit, toys and table tennis, all in a secure space, the children will be amused for hours and you can lie back and relax! Enjoy!

“Wonderful base from which to see Normandy”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Le Pin Sable. The house was well-equipped, comfortable and close to all amenities including the beach, restaurants, supermarket and the weekly market which is not to be missed. We enjoyed barbecues in the garden in the evenings as the weather was sunny and warm. As we had never been to Normandy before, the house was perfect as a base to see the WW2 sites, visit the beautiful towns along the coast etc.. I thoroughly recommend Le Pin Sable to anybody!
