The Island of Malta region

Malta – the very name conjures up thoughts of the George Cross and enough historical sights to keep you busy for a month. But there's so much more to this little beauty than a fascinating past. These days you're just as likely to hear about its film locations and night life as you are its history and culture.

The Hollywood swords 'n' sandals epics Troy, Gladiator and Alexander were all filmed on the island's sunny shores. World famous DJs are flocking here to spin some discs at the up-and-coming hotspots. But though Malta's image is changing fast, its breathtaking beauty remains one of the key things that draws people back year after year. Wherever you go, the island's eye-popping scenery provides a sigh-inducing backdrop. And as for all that history, with so much of the past still visible today, there's no wonder it's known as an open-air museum. Travel back in time to discover Malta's mysterious prehistory. Retrace the footsteps of St Paul. Or see where the Knights of St John defended Christendom. But Malta is no regular museum. Here life is lived to the full, so be prepared to get stuck into the Mediterranean way of life. Throw yourself into carnivals and make the most of the island's packed calendar of events. If you're looking for a destination that offers more than just a suntan, Malta's a first class choice and even more enjoyable when staying at Villa Lyss.

Mellieha

Want to break away from holidaying hoards and get to the heart of Malta? Try Mellieha. This hilltop hamlet may share a street and a name with Mellieha Bay, but it's about 2km inland.

A sleepy atmosphere. A small, picturesque centre. A people famed for their pragmatism, independence and friendly welcome. Mellieha has a distinctly rural charm.

Scout about the centre's church, complete with underground grotto. Crawl back fifty years in the famous World War II shelters and see how the Maltese people earned that George Cross. The Xemxija Heritage Route has everything from Roman roads to megaliths – or for some recent history, visit the 8 tons of nails and 2000 gallons of paint that make up the set of Popeye the Movie's Sweethaven.

To reach Malta's longest sandy beach, simply take the road through the centre of town down to Mellieha Bay and head to Ghadira Beach. Sun, sand and watersports – what more does a beach need?

Eating out isn't an issue. International and local cuisine, familiar and fascinating food are all on the menu. Be warned however, our apartment is so cosy you may never want to step outside!!!!

“Perfect for our family”

Reviewed 10 May 2017

We stayed at Villa Lyss for a week in May. We travelled with our two children aged 3 and 7 months. We had the ground floor apartment which was perfect for our family. All of the rooms were spacious, clean and safe. We had everything we needed including a really good travel cot and high chair. The shared pool and outside areas were beautiful and again secure and safe for our family. Our son loved the pool and swam at least twice a day. The outdoor eating area had morning sunshine which we enjoyed everyday. Ray and Marie (owners) were very accommodating and made sure that we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay - including a few toys for the children. Ray and Marie live on the top floor of the apartment which is great as they are around if you need them but they still allow you time and space to relax and feel comfortable. Mellieha itself is a great location to explore Malta - we hired a car which isn't essential but it made our trip easier. Parking is easy at the Villa and in most locations around Malta. Thanks again to Ray and Marie for having us!

Owner's reply: It was really wonderful having you with us and pleasure to assisted you. Thank you for coming at Villa Lyss property and we looking forward to see you again. Ray and Maria.

“Nice place to stay”

We had a nice week in Villa Lyss. We stayed in Appartment Nr. 2. It is very big, bright and perfect cleaned. The view over the Pool and upon the surrounding is beautifull. The owner Ray an his wife are very sympathetic and helpfull.

“Fantastic holiday”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2016

We stayed at this apartment for 2 weeks in Aug 16. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to come back. The property is very clean and well maintained. We stayed in one of the first floor apartments, which had a lovely view over the bay and surrounding area. Ray and Maria were very friendly and helpful whenever we had a question or query. The lack of A/C was not an issue for us. I would recommend getting a car as Mellieha isn't that big and there are some lovely places in Malta to explore.

“lovely holiday”

Nice clean apartment. nothing too much trouble for Ray & Maria. We had a lovely holiday staying in apartment 1. Great location and plenty of good places to eat, especially the Cross keys on the main road.. This was our first time in Malta and we will be back again to explore this delightful island. only down point was that next door a villa is being built, so builders start really early, hopefully that will be finished soon, other than that we had great time..

“Great Location”

Reviewed 20 Jul 2016

We stayed at the villa in Mid June. We chose the location as we had stayed at another villa further up the Triq-li-Etna 18 months earlier. We arrived on a delayed flight after 21:00 and the owner met us, checked everything was okay and that pattern continued throughout our stay. Whenever we had an issue (there was only really one and that was our error) they were extremely swift to respond. The apartment itself was the two bedroom 1st floor (not ground) which was clean and nicely decorated. It had everything you would need to cater lightly for your family and the welcome pack was much appreciated as we arrived after the shops closed. The pool was really large and during the day it was extremely peaceful. The decking area had a BBQ if you wanted to use it (we didn't) but no seating other than sun loungers. My only slight criticism was the lack of AC. I've been coming to Malta for 30 years and in the height of summer that could be a problem for some but not all. The ceiling fans were okay for the Mid June 25-30c temps but when it peaks out closer to 35-40c in August they might get overwhelmed. The walk to the village is a short five minutes over the hill behind or about 15 minutes up to the main road. There's a selection of great places to eat in the village including the Hilltop, The Commando and if you just want a pizza, try the Cross Keys on the main road. The shops are up there too and there's a couple within a short walk as well as a bottle shop/off licence/cash and carry that does great prices up the street just by the bus stop on the main road. A car is needed to explore properly. The bus on the main road goes down to the beach and the service is frequent.

“Perfect Malta rental...by all means”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2016

My family and me, four in total, had 10 supreme days in one of Ray's apartments located in a tranquil area in Mellieha. Both the quality of the apartment and the outer facilities are of high class, and so is the view over the valley from the pool area. Around 20 minutes by foot to Mellieha Bay with one of the best sandy beaches...alternatively 5-7 minutes to the nearest bus stop, offering trouble-free and frequent transportation, whether it is to Mellieha Bay or Valetta. Ray and his family are very helpfull and strives to make your stay in Malta as comfortable as possible, and can be fully recommended. Thank you, Debono's, for a very nice holiday in your apartment and lovely country...we will be back again.
