The Brittany region
The village is on the Normandy/Brittany borders of the region of Ille-et-Vilaine. It's regional capital is Rennes, a historic town with plenty to admire, visit the Museum of Fine Art, take in the exhibitions along the Champs Libres or the bustling Saturday weekly market.
The Emerald Coast stretches from the bay of Mont St Michel all the way to St. Briauc. You will find the popular ports of Cancale, St Malo and Dinard along this stretch of beautiful coastline. This area is renowned for its beaches, pretty villages and superb seafood, particularly oysters from Cancale.
St Malo is a walled port city, full of cafes and pavement restaurants, you can take a walk along the ramparts or stroll along one of the beaches or set sail on a traditional sailing ship. There is also the Grand Aquarium if the weather isn't so nice, where you can surround yourself by sharks and giant turtles in the underwater viewing tunnel. St. Malo looks out to Dinard, which has several beaches, a casino and thalassotherapy spa. Dinard is full of stunning buildings, restaurants and the main beach, Place de L'Ecluse is lined with stripy tents from June to September.
Well worth a visit is the pretty medieval town of Dinan, which sits on the River Rance. It's old buildings and cobbled streets are filled with boutiques, cafes and and there is a large weekly market on Thursdays. Take a walk on the cobbled streets down the hill to the river passing through character buildings with boutiques selling jewellery, pottery and paintings where you can end up on the river at one of the many cafes and restaurants.
St Malo/Dinard are about 1 hour 15 mins drive from Melle.
The village of Melle has been awarded two stars for its floral displays. It has a pretty church with a small cafe and shop next to it where you can have lunch or dinner and buy your daily bread from a local artisan baker.
20km away is the medieval town of Fougeres with its magnificent 12th century castle, explore the pretty old town Place du Marchix which is lined with half timbered houses. There are plenty of shops and restaurants and a lively weekly Saturday market. Just outside the town is Fougeres forest where you can hike, cycle or go horseriding. You will also find a sandy beach and lake with a watersports centre and mountain bike rental.
Nearby is La Chatellier where you will find the beautiful gardens of Haute Bretagne Floral Garden, you can wander round the themed gardens and enjoy a cup of tea or ice-cream at the Chateau.
Local towns are Vitre with its half timbered houses and fairytale castle dating from the 13th century and St Hilaire-du-Harcouet with plenty of shopping, weekly market and a large park with lakes, children's play area and mini golf.
Just outside the town of St James is the American Cemetery or less than a 90 minute drive are the D Day landing beaches well worth a day trip.

"Peaceful fantastic place"
We loved our stay at Maison Bleue and the pretty village of Melle. The house is very welcoming, spacious and comfortable with fantastic facilities and a large garden with views of the countryside. It is so peaceful and relaxing. There is a lovely local shop to get fresh bread daily! We stayed for five days visiting the Normandy beaches, Mont St Michel and the medieval towns Fougeres and Dinan. There is so much to do here or you can just relax in the pretty garden that we have already booked to return with friends this September.
Thank you so much for your kind review, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Maison Bleue and look forward to you returning again. With kindest regards Rachel McNally
