The Chania Prefecture region
Beautiful Crete and Chania, a heavenly and pure land brimming with natural beauty, history, memory and culture. It is a land whose visitors will experience nature in all its glory and will encounter breathtaking sights.
Endless stretches of seashore bordered in frothy lace, inlets and islands of exotic beauty and sandy beaches tucked away at the foot of forbidding mountains. Impenetrable but yet such majestic gorges, holy caves, blessed rivers and lush, green plateaus thickly covered with olive and citrus trees. It is a self-sufficient land in every way that is rich in endemic and rare flora and fauna. We highly recommend that you take a stroll in the city centre of Hania which is steeped in history; a sightseeing tour of the crossroads and the winding cobbled paths of civilizations with the starting point being the most central point in Hania: the Municipal Market or the Agora. The Venetian old town with its harbour and Lighthouse, with its excellent restaurants and shops will fascinate you!
The Apokoronas region spreads to the east of Chania with its seaside villages enjoying excellent views to the entrance of Souda bay and the Akrotiri peninsula across. It is a very fertile area (olive trees, vines, avocado trees, orange lemon and mandarin trees) with several sandy beaches at Almirida, Kalives and Georgioupolis. Apokoronas is one of the most picturesque areas of the province of Chania with many attractive and authentic villages like Armeni, Nio Chorio, Samonas, Ramni etc.
There are wonderful walks in this lush area, including the Diktamos Gorge and several others along countryside paths through orange and lemon groves, by the sides of rivers Xidas and Koiliaris. Extending several kilometers inland it is rich in olive and citrus groves, pasture lands and tiny hamlets rarely visited by tourists. In the spring-time, the fields, groves and tracks are filled in endless varieties of flora including many species which are endemic to Crete. Birdwatchers will find a large number of local as well as migratory birds to see, ranging from tiny warblers to large buzzards, eagles and hawks.
Aptera is a beautiful small village near the famous Aptera Castle (to which you can walk from the villa) located above the bay of Souda. The village itself has a couple of small shops and several tavernas offering delicious locally made food from organic produce. The village belongs to the region of Apokoronas. The nearest beach to the villa is a small, almost private beach, below Kalami. There are several other sandy beaches within a short drive (Kalives 3 kms, Almirida 7 kms etc).
One of the most prominent attractions of the area near Villa Amelie is the archaeological site of ancient Aptera about 2,5km to the east. Aptera is a site in western Crete, a kilometer inland from the southern shore of Souda Bay, about 13 kilometers east of Chania. The site is now maintained by the Greek Ministry of Culture, Department of Antiquities. The hilltop, about 150 meters above the sea, commands views of Souda Bay and the Akrotiri Peninsula to the north, the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) to the south, and Kalives and the Turkish Itzendin Castle to the east.
Several structures within the monastery enclosure are in excellent condition, including a chapel and a two-story block of cells. The surrounding site is notable for a two-part temple from the 5th century BC, a large three-vaulted Roman cistern, Roman baths, and parts of several Doric temples. An ancient theater is being excavated but is not open to visitors.
Just 3km from Aptera you can enjoy the sea at the sandy beaches of Kalives, Almirida and Kalami, or taste the fresh fish in local taverns.
In Megala Chorafia there is a mini-market, a traditional "kafenion" and three tavernas with excellent food...
