The Larnaka District
Larnaca town with its traditional and international shops and bars, marina, palm tree lined promenade, tourist beaches and other attractions is 20 mins drive. Further afield, the capital Nicosia is 30 mins away to the north where you can visit the traditional old town and modern shopping malls, and maybe even venture into Turkish controlled Northern Cyprus; 45 mins drive to the east is Agia Napa which has quietened down considerably from its hell-raising days and boasts some of the island’s best sandy beaches, plus Waterworld; even closer to the west is Limassol, in and around which are many of Cyprus’ most fascinating archaeological sites….and you can go cycling, hiking or even skiing in and around the natural beauty of the Troodos mountains within an hour from Mazotos.
The Mazotos area is well known for its tourist attraction, the Camel Park, which has been described as the best day out on the island and is within walking distance of our apartment. Walking or cycling is a great way to enjoy the scenery here and bikes can be hired from nearby Pervolia. The nearest sandy beach is just a mile away (a flat walk past olive groves, fig trees and vines) and is a well-kept secret by locals, reached by a track opposite the complex. Walk, drive or cycle and if you don’t fancy sunbathing, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the coastal path.
Mazotos village has a couple of well-stocked supermarkets, a bar and a local café. If you like seafood check out the great fish restaurant on the beach (grilled sea bream, home-made chips, village salad and a nice cold bottle of Keo come very well recommended!) For more bars, restaurants, tavernas and local life, the villages of Kiti and Pervolia are 10 minutes away in the car. The famous fish taverns of Zygi are 15 mins or so drive along the stunning coast road.

"Bright, spacious apartment - with a fantastic private roof-top terrace!"
We had a wonderful 10 day stay at this penthouse apartment in Mazotos in late July 2011 - it very quickly became a home away from home! The apartment has an open plan kitchen/dining room/living room, with double and twin bedrooms. It also has a main bathroom/WC, and a second separate WC...something which I’m sure would be invaluable if staying here with a more than just two people. There are also sofa beds in the living room, should you need them. The apartment is furnished to a high spec - with air-conditioning throughout, satellite TV, well equipped kitchen, and a selection of books and DVDs for a quiet evening in. The two apartment blocks on the site share a pool - but when we stayed here in July it was very quiet, and we pretty much had the pool to ourselves! One of the key features of the apartment is its secluded and large terrace - with views across the surrounding fields, and out to the sea...absolutely perfect for private sunbathing, and evening meals outdoors when the temperature cools. There is also a lift - which would be useful for elderly/disabled visitors. We hired a car for our stay (you can park the car in the relative cool of the car-port under the apartment), and used this to get around most of the time as it was very hot...and even walking short distances can take it out of you. It is a very short drive/walk to the nearest beach - a quiet and non-touristy beach, which has darker sand compared to some more popular beaches, and is therefore not quite as picturesque; but has lovely clear water and sand under foot when in the water (mixture of pebbles/sand on the beach itself). Take some swimming goggles into the water and keep an eye out for little squid, plaice, and other fish. There is a small kiosk here where you can hire a lounger/parasol (very cheap - I think it was 1 Euro for the day), and buy a cold drink. Near to this beach is also a fantastic seafood restaurant called Acroyialis - looks a bit basic from the outside, but the food is fantastic. If you have a car available, make sure you check out the beach at Protaras - this is a very popular and commercial beach, but has crystal clear turquoise water, teeming with all sorts of wonderfully colourful fish. Near to Protaras is the Capo Greco peninsular - a dramatic rocky headland with tranquil clear water on the sheltered side, and choppy open sea on the other...very beautiful. We also loved visiting Lefkara, a pretty little traditional lace-making village with loads of character; and Nicosia (also known as Lefkosia - don’t be confused by the alternating use of either name on the road signs!), where you can get a day visa to visit the Turkish side of the city...worth doing just to the see the stark contrast between European and middle-eastern cultures. All of these places were easily reached from our base at the penthouse in Mazotos - roads were easy to navigate; and in Cyprus you drive on the left, so driving there was no trouble at all. We’re very much looking forward to our next visit to this beautiful and superbly located apartment!
