Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

The Departement of Tarn in the Region of Midi-Pyrenees is located in the beautiful environs of the Montagnes Noires (Black Mountains) of the Haut Languedoc National Park. The surrounding area is ideal for outdoor pursuits for all generations and is world renowned for its natural, rugged beauty and its particularly healthy climate which combines elements of Atlantic, mountain and Mediterranean influences.

Sports enthusiasts will note that this is the French home of Rugby. For those prepared to travel further afield there is a one hour and 15 mins drive to the Mediterranean beaches of Bezier and Narbonne in the summer or alternatively shopping forays to the world renowned tax haven of Andorra (3 hours) or to the attractive local towns of Mazamet (20)mins), Castre (30 mins), Albi (75 mins) or of course the world famous Carcassone (1hr 10 mins).

The famous medieval castle of Carcassonne is one of the world's largest living fortified ramparts. It combines an awe-inspiring panorama of genuine historical interest in the day time followed by lazy, latin evenings wondering amongst the lively wonderful cafes, restaurants, shops and bars in its winding medieval streets. Alternatively, for the really intrepid, skiing in the Pyrenees is a 2 hour drive in the winter.

Mazamet

The village of Labastide-Rouairoux is a five minute saunter away. A former textile village typical for the region it now has a textile museum as testimony to its past. It has all typical amenities for a small French village to include cafe, pizza restaurant/take away, children's play area, supermarket and two excellent patiseries. The West side of the village, Code Bosc, holds its lively annual fete in early July with the main village fete du fil held around 15 August.

The local area is characterised by the beautiful green rolling foot-hills and mountains of the Montagnes Noires providing the ideal backdrop for wonderful walks right on your doorstep along the Green Route 'Route Verte' in the form of a converted railway line. It is a region perfect for those who love flora and fauna and the great outdoors . The choices range from canoeing, pot holing, walking, bird watching, horse riding, swimming in the famous lakes or local pools, camping, fishing, climbing and hiking.

By car you can discover the rolling hills, mountains and landscapes of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc which the region is set in and which forms the southernmost extension of the Massif Central. The ride will take you up through the renowned scenic Route des Lacs to lakes at La Salvetat, Lacaune, Les Montanges to name but a few of the large natural lakes of the region. The tourist information service in Labastide-Rouairoux village, just a five minute walk away, can provide all necessary information.
