“a perfect choice”
This is a beautiful house in a glorious part of France. The house is very well equipped and the owner, Penny, is a pleasure to deal with. This was one of the nicest holidays we have had and we will seriously consider returning to Rue de l'eglise. The location in the mountains and close to the Med is excellent. Ceret is a must to visit, as is wakeboarding (at the lake 3km away), the little yellow train...
Owner's reply: Thank you for your lovely review. Do come again! Penny
“Excellent compact property with glorious views”
We spent 8 days here in mostly glorious spring weather - blossom on trees, wildflowers and butterflies galore, etc. The property is in a convenient village location, with wonderful views of the mountains (esp of Canigou, if you sit in the right place!). It's well appointed, with everything you might need. Bedrooms are a little tight for space. Top floor would be ideal for losing the children, if you had them with you - but we didn't have cause to test that theory. Internet TV is a plus for those who don't carry web-enabled devices around with them on holiday. A friendly village, with better facilities than most. In particular, two boulangeries which it was impossible to choose between, an excellent restaurant, and a bar. Plenty of walking options direct from the property - or within a few km if you want to take the car out.
“A perfect escape”
Our second visit. The first was in the height of the midsummer season last year. Then there were 3 generations of our family, this time only the seniors! The house remains as we expected, simple, comfortable, warm and containing all we could need. We were welcomed back by the Maureillas community who remembered us! We now look forward to the next multigeneration visit this August.
“Perfect house in perfect setting - superb for all ages (6-seventy plus for us!)”
Rue De l'Eglise, set in picture postcard perfect village of Maureillas las Illas was, quite simply, perfect. We drove from Devon - via Dover - to get there. An arduous 3 day journey which involved two under 10s, two mid-40s and two 70-ishes (won't give away specifics)! We were tired and hot and a bit fractious by the time we swung into the village, but the site of the beautiful square (complete with two restaurants, butchers, and driving school), and the almost medieval lane down which the house lay, was enough to lift all our spirits. Ooos and ahhs from all of us - youngest to oldest. The house itself not only was suitably picturesque, it was ridiculously thoughtfully presented. Everything from a box of Lego in the kids attic room (we NEVER saw them - :)) to picnic baskets, beach umbrellas, a bottle of superb wine, more glasses, plates and bowls than you could need, a visitors book full of useful info, fans in each room, games to play, CDs, even ENGLISH TELLY (great for a father who hates to miss the news!) and more were provided. Penny the owner could not do more for us and really has thought of it all. (NB- there is no garden, or pool, but believe me we have outdoor-mad girls aged 6 and 9 and this did not bother them AT ALL). The view from the balcony, the Pyrenees beckoning us, was stunning and enhanced on our first Sunday morning by a local mountain choir coming down to sing in the church after which the street was named. A magical welcome which had all of us entranced. To be honest, Maureillas is crammed with such moments (make sure you check out local brass band practice - if you are in the square you can't miss it!). The village has all you need and more to survive! A brilliant local in El Tap, a fine dining option in Vins 66 (cold cucumber soup - who knew it could be so bonkersly good - AND the wonderful Sabrina gave us the recipe), exceptional butcher, local shop, two bakeries, a pizzeria, tabac, even a helpful and welcoming pharmacy. Nearby there is so much to do. Ceret is magical, the mountain drives breath-taking, the beaches all you expect from the med, the local lake had us there every day and was a firm fav with the children. We even ventured into Spain to Figures and the coast road home... long, windy but spectacular. And that only touches the surface of what is on offer. We stayed for two, superb weeks. We feel we made firm friends, lots of kisses and "a l'annee prochaines' on our departure, and we booked the house again (for TWO more stays) before we left. We liked it, and Maureillas, THAT much, and we still have so much more to explore. All of us - from the youngest to the the oldest - cannot wait to return and what can be a better review than that? The Norrises (x4) and G-Gs (x2).
Owner's reply: Thanks so much for your glowing review. Looking forward to seeing you all in 2014! Penny
“Excellent facilities made it feel like home from home”
We found Rue de l'Eglise a particularly comfortable rental property which was very well equipped and we loved the friendly village of Maureillas with its general store and its boulangeries providing everything for breakfast. There was plenty of information about places to visit and offers of help from the owner. We fell in love with the mountain view which was an added bonus.
“Cool Catalan Village Apartment”
Stunning view of Pyrenees in this cool village pad. Great base for exploring beaches of the Vermilion Coast and Costa Brava. 3 bedroom, though one a kids attic retreat (with separate Tv) in great little mountain village. Short stroll through narrow medieval lane ways takes you to restaurant and town bar. Great pizza place down another lane. For a taste of Catalan village life this place can't be beat. 5 min from Ceret with its epic weekend market, funky art gallery, rugby team and tree lined streets. Owner Penny is v helpful and full of local tips. We stayed 2 weeks in the off season and loads to do.
Owner's reply: Thanks for your great comments, glad you all had a good time. Penny
“My second visit this year”
This was my second stay this year in this delightful house. I found it even better equippped this time - just small improvements but the owners seem to have thought of everything. The house is so central that it is only 2 mins' walk to the shops and wonderful buses for which one pays just one euro for two hours' travel. I even reached Vernet-les-Bains for one euro! I found the neighbours particularly friendly and found it hard to drag myself away from this super litle house in a region that has everything - mountains, sea, vineyards and excellent small shops. I plan to return early next year ... No 11 is a real home from home.
Owner's reply: Thanks so much for your lovely review. We look forward to seeing you for your next visit to Maureillas!
“Great location, friendly village and charming host”
The gite was well and thoughtfully equipped, cosy and overlooked a small, quiet church square. The small balcony, accessed from the sitting area, was perfect for standing in and admiring the view towards Canigou. Maureillas itself was a very friendly village totally unspoilt by tourism. It had an excellent restaurant and a bar on the other side of the square, the restaurant was so good that we ate out most evenings. I would certainly recommended it to anyone looking for a holiday rental near the Spanish border.
Owner's reply: Many thanks for your lovely review. I hope you see you in this area again! Penny
“Wonderful and authentic French village house with all mod cons!”
The house is well situated for Ceret, beaches, Collioure and Spain. Well equipped, light and airy. The church yard immediately outside can be enjoyed at any time and this makes up for the lack of outside space. The facilities inside the house are well-thought out and generous. Maureillas itself has 2 restaurants, bakeries and a laid-back charm. Great for families and older couples.
had the best holiday here. great little house, great villiage in a fantastic and beautiful area. perfect for the sea, the mountains and kid freindly village.
