The Island of Malta region
Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages lead to the main square, which is invariably dominated by the huge baroque church. As the countryside is dotted with medieval towers, wayside chapels and the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.
The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of over 400,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 316 square kilometers.
Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited.
With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.
Marsaskala (a.k.a. Wied il-Ghajn) has developed only in recent years from a small fishing village into the popular southern resort it is today.
The harbour is still used by a few fishermen, their colourful Luzzu sharing the moorings with pleasure craft. Life here is centred on the long harbour promenade with its many open-air cafes and restaurants. For much of its past the village was a tranquil backwater, though it has seen its share of the Islands' main historical events. Marsaskala Bay made easy landing for Barbary Corsairs and Ottoman Turks who raided the Islands from the Middle Ages to the late 17th century.
After a large Ottoman fleet landed here in 1614, the Knights set about improving the bay's defences, building the imposing Fort St. Thomas in nearby St. Thomas' Bay. Locals built their own domestic versions. The Mamo Tower on the road to Zejtun, now fully restored, is a fine example of a fortified farmhouse. It was built in a unique shape - the cross of St. Andrew. It is open to the public from Thursday to Sunday from 9am till noon.

"Did the job..."
We stayed in this villa in order that we could attend a family wedding in Sliema. There was plenty of space for the 6 of us. The accommodation had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We were able to park our hire car outside on the street. We were expecting the villa to be away from other properties but it is on a quiet street with an apartment above it. The area looked run down but there were some nice bars and restaurants and we felt safe walking out at night. Malta is so small we were able to spend our days sightseeing knowing that we could retreat to the coolness of our own pool at the end of the day. All in all this villa did the job.

"Superb views, had everything we wished."
Lovely peaceful villa with super sea views, which was well equipped. Very handy for local shops and for the frequent buses into Valletta. Owners extremely helpful with ideas of places and restaurants to visit, when we asked. Loved the TV in each bedroom.

"one of the best views in Malta."
The villa had everything that we needed for our holiday. The thing we liked the most about it was that it had a very homely feel about it, not like other villas that are more like show homes, which sometimes make you too scared to touch anything!!. The villa was situated in a very good location in Marsascala. There are local shops nearby and even a chemist !. St Thomas bay, one of our favourite beaches, is very close too!. There is a great choice of restaurants and bars a short drive away if you fancy a meal out, if not the villa is a lovely place to spend the evening, enjoying a meal on the terrace or even going for an evening swim!. The views from the villa are outstanding, our favourite was waking up to the sunrise over the sea.The worst thing about our holiday was leaving at the end of a thoroughly relaxing week. The owner was very welcoming and helpful.
