“fraudulent advertising should be banned from housetrip”

quiet? the train runs across the back yard of the house! not to mention the proximity to the airport. but worse, the neighbors are building a 3-story complex. The owner said he was unaware. Really?? clean? the blinds were so grimy we had to disinfect our hands after trying to open the windows - one of which was broken and stuffed with a dirty plastic bag (see photos) One dish towel (which had to be washed before using...) We should be reimbursed for at least the cleaning fee since we left the house much cleaner than it was. And HouseTrip should be liable for abetting fraud

Owner's reply: Part of the appeal to the apartment is the mention of the proximity to all forms of public transport: planes, trains and buses. Therefore, one must expect some noise from those. There is occasionally some construction noise from the next door neighbours but this occurs during business hours. Most people who rent the apartment are tourists and are gone for most of the day. In the evening and at night there is no noise. The apartment is a period home and does have lead light windows. The hole mentioned by the guest was just 5 cms across. The part is custom made and it does take some time to source it. It is important to note what the guest did not mention in his review. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable and air-conditioned. The kitchen and the bathroom are also in perfect working order. The wi-fi is free and unlimited. As for the cleaning, if something is not to the guest's satisfaction they should notify us asap and we can rectify the problem immediately. There was no attempt by the guest to contact us and let us know. Finally, a spacious 2 bedroom serviced apartment in the area costs a few hundred dollars a day. We charge about 100 dollars, a fraction of the price. HouseTrip and trip advisor allow many people who previously couldn't afford holidays the chance to do so and we are proud to be part of it.

We stayed at this house for four weeks this Summer throughout August. Sadly I would be reluctant to recommend it to others – apart from possibly backpackers looking for a cheap alternative to a hostel. My main issue is that the house was totally misrepresented in both the photographs and the description. It was entirely furnished in mismatched items that had clearly been borrowed or left by the previous owner. Furniture was old and past its best, crockery and cutlery had been randomly selected and we were missing any wine glasses, sufficient cutlery, the fridge either froze things or didn’t keep them cool, etc. The kitchen was relatively newly fitted but bizarrely there was no oven (not mentioned in the description) which very much limited our ability to cook. Although it was described as a kitchen/dinner it was basically an old decrepit sofa put into the kitchen. The television could only be watched via an indoor broken aerial and there was no DVD player of any kind (although there were some DVDs in the hall!). Much of the furniture and furnishings in the photographs were not evident during our rental of the property. Overall the standard of cleanliness wasn’t particularly high when we arrived – certainly not what would be expected for paying guests. It was impossible to sit out in the advertised front garden because of the number of feral cats roaming in the street,along with the strong odour of cats urine, meant we couldn't sit on any of the chairs. One of the “period windows” had an old plastic bag stuffed into it to keep out the drafts. There was no welcome information of any kind – consequently we couldn’t work the heating system; when a fuse blew we didn’t know where to look to replace it; we were told about the bins being different colours but we didn’t know where they were or what day they were collected. We appreciate that it was significantly cheaper than other places that we looked at but we would still expect a basic level of hygiene and furnishings. If you are a group of friends who want somewhere to crash for a few days near the city then this is fine – but for a family with a young child it was very disappointing and meant that we were unable to spend any time there, especially in the evenings. The property is adjacent to a train line, which we were aware of, however it was not clear that it was also goods/freight train line with very loud freight trains running throughout the night. Obviously we wont be staying at this property again which is a shame as Marrickville is an excellent suburb and within close reach of the CBD. Disappointed!

Owner's reply: 1) Miisrepresentation in both photos and description. The photos are actual photos taken of the apartment. The description is accurate as it describes the location of the apartment and the layout as to what is included. The consequences of not being accurate is to have every guest complain as well as being reprimanded from trip advisor. 2) Noise from the trains. I clearly state that the house is 200m from the train station and part of the appeal is that it is so close to public transport. 3) Fromt garden smells of urine from feral cats. Feral animals such as cats are a problem in many suburbs in big cities such as Sydney. this is something that residents are discussing with council to try to reduce the problem. I do everything I can to maintain my lawns and to keep the property clean. 4) Instructions not clear on which bins to use. There are 3 bins, a green, a red and a yellow. The bins are issued by the council and have clear labels on what goes where. 5) A hole in the window is stuffed with a plastic bag. The hole the guest is referring to is about 2cms in diameter. A small piece of the headlight period window has broken. A new one has been ordered but as it is a period window, some time is taken for the piece to be received. 6) Furniture and cutlery does not match. This is true. I haven't matched all the furniture and cutlery to try to keep the cost down. However, the furniture is clean and of good quality affording a good sleep. 7) No CD player. That is true, there isn't. There is however, unlimited wi-fi where virtually anything can be downloaded and this is what I use but I understand some people prefer the CD format.
