The Calabria region
The region of Calabria has managed to remain relatively untouched and escaped mass tourism. It has long since been a favourite holiday haunt of the Northern Italians and Germans. Calabria is one of Italy's best kept secrets with its mild climates, dramatic scenery of sea and mountains and mouth watering cuisine; the temperature rarely dips below 18 degrees from March to November.
The town of Tropea hosts a large number of Restuarants, Pizzerias and Ice-cream parlours.
On a clear day you can see the Aeolian islands. The largest of which, Stromboli, can be seen from the apartment. The islands can be visited by boats which depart regularly from Tropea in the summer months.
Sunset from the town of Tropea is spectacular and can be viewed from a number of chic cafes that sit directly on the edge of the town (and the cliffs). Once the sun has set Tropea comes alive with the sounds and smells from bars, cafes and restaurants that stay open until late.
The historic town of Pizzo is famous for Tartufo, a small ball of ice cream filled with molten chocolate. Pizzo is a sea port whose main activity is fishing. A small castle can be found, in which Joachim Murat, ex king of Naples and bother-in-law to Napoleon was shot as a traitor in 1815. The tiny harbour and clear blue waters are lined with bars, restaurants and pizzerias. In the upper town you will be able to sample the famous Tartufo in any of the many ice cream parlours. A visit to Pizzo is well recommended.
Marina di Zambrone
Zambrone di Marina has its own station, with terraced cafe, serviced by the Coastal train. You can travel direct from Lamezia to Zambrone taking in the beautiful sea views of Pizzo. The train goes as far as the regions capital Reggio di Calabria and gives easy accessibility to the town of Tropea.
Zambrone di Marina hosts a selection of bars and restaurants, with excellent food and a large selection of wines. Alternatively you can purchase regional produce together with your essentials from a well stocked local supermarket .
There are two beaches each with their own personality. The main beach with its crystal clear blue sea has easy accessibilty and ample parking. There is also a beautiful sandy secluded beach hidden away close to the rail station,
The hill top town of Zambrone offers additional amenities including pizzeras, bars, local butchery, fishmongers and post office.

"Amazing hidden gem in real Italy!!"
We arrived at night time and was met at the apartment by a english couple who showed us around the apartment and gave us lots of local knowledge and armed with this and the information pack we had no problem finding our way around. The next morning i was awoken by shrills of delight from my wife on investigation i saw the most amazing view from our apartment, the bluest sea you have ever seen! Just down the road from the apartment is the local store, with beautiful fresh produce, butchery department , bread, dried goods and of course alchol, very friendly and only 5 minutes walk. We discovered a very private beach just 10 minutes walk away, it has it's own path down but could be a bit tricky for the less mobile but still not impossiable, after finding this gem the next day we went to a local market brought a picnic and fresh fish which we then went back to the beach and cooked the fish on the stones, enjoyed our lunch and swam for the rest of the day incrediable. We spent two days in Sciliy about an hour and a half away to the ferry, loved this aswell we even got to go up to the captains deck and my children got to steer the ferry! we managed to pack so much in whilst seemingly doing nothing and just relaxing eating ice creams and the best food ever. I cant express how much we all loved this place, from the well organised, clean with the best views ever apartment to the surrounding towns, beaches and markets. we travelled with our 2 children who, at 7 & 10 shared the sofa bed, loved this holiday as much as us and still talk about Salvatores Pizzeria at the bottom of the road from the apartment. Thanks very much and we shall return!!

"Glorious views and friendly local service"
Fantastic views of Stromboli volcano (70km away!) in the evening, and lovely warmth throughout the day. Well positioned for a quiet cove beach to relax on, and very friendly service at the local train station cafe, and the terrace restaurant close by. A great springboard for short trips by train to Pizzo and Tropea themselves - be aware that the last train back at night from Tropea doesn't always run! - and also for a day or two onwards to Sicily.
