The Costa del Sol is a region in the south of Spain, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, comprising the coastal towns and communities along the Mediterranean coastline of the Mlaga province.

It is situated between two lesser known costas: Costa de la Luz and Costa Tropical. Formerly made up only of a series of small, quiet fishing settlements, the region has been completely transformed during the latter part of the 20th century into a tourist destination of world renown.

It includes the city of Mlaga and the towns of Torremolinos, Benalmdena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcntara, Estepona, Manilva, Vlez-Mlaga, Rincon de la Victoria, Nerja, Torrox, the community of Sotogrande, San Roque and La Lnea de la Concepcin.

Settlement in the region dates back to the Bronze Age, and has been colonised and ruled by many cultures such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Visigoths and Moors, before the Reconquista.

Historically its population lived in the fishing villages, and in the "white" villages a little distance inland, in the mountains running down to the coast. The area was discovered and developed to meet the demands of international tourism in the 1950s and has since been a popular destination for foreign tourists not only for its beaches but also for its local culture. The area is particularly famous for its towns like Marbella, which provides the Costa del Sol with its reputation for being a playground for its super-rich and famous visitors.

The Costa del Sol is a popular tourist region. It welcomes millions of people annually, who mostly arrive at International Malaga airport and head to one of the many resorts located along this stretch of coastline from Gibraltar in the west to Nerja in the east.

Marbella

Benahavis is a Spanish mountain village just a 5min drive from the entrance of the golf course. this friendly town is renowned for its restaurants, and it is often called the dining room of the Costa del Sol. Benahavis holds nine of the 60 golf courses in the Costa del Sol; this number is expected to increase, again, to fifteen in the next decade.

If you get a chance, take an hour long trip through stunning scenery to Rhonda. Ronda is situated in a very mountainous area about 750 m above mean sea level. The Guadalevín River runs through the city, dividing it in two and carving out the steep, 100 plus meters deep El Tajo canyon upon which the city perches. Things to see here are the Three bridges, Puente Romano ("Roman Bridge", also known as the Puente San Miguel), Puente Viejo ("Old Bridge", also known as the Puente Arabe or "Arab Bridge") and Puente Nuevo ("New Bridge"), span the canyon. The Puente Nuevo is the tallest of the bridges, towering 120 metres (390 ft) above the canyon floor, and all three serve as some of the city's most impressive features.

The ‘Corrida Goyesca’ is a unique and historical bullfight that takes place once a year in Ronda in the Plaza de toros de Ronda, the oldest bullfighting ring in Spain.

Perhaps the most well known place to visit which is about a 20min drive away is Marbella. This luxurious resort town seems to have it all and is, once again, rising to the fore as a favourite location with the rich and famous, as well as more ordinary folk who are willing to pay just a little bit extra for southern Spain's answer to St Tropez.

However, Marbella has a down to earth side as well, an air of individuality which can be best appreciated by exploring back streets in the old part of town. One of the prettiest places is the fabled 'Orange Square' which is located just off the main street in the older district. Here expect to meet with stately buildings, small shops, art galleries, bars and bistros and is a hub of activity day and night. Be sure to explore the honeycomb of surrounding narrow streets where homes and shops intermingle to create the atmosphere of a small village, rather than a cosmopolitan town. There are numerous excellent restaurants to choose from, ranging from those specialising in the predictably pricey exclusive cordon bleu to the gritty individuality of a backstreet Spanish bar where the Serrano ham is gently cured by tobacco smoke and the tapas are both tasty and filling.

Gibraltar is about a 40min drive, but I think its well worth a visit. First time visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the diverse range of attractions on offer in Gibraltar. Steeped in a history that has evolved from its strategic location at the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, where Europe meets Africa.

Visitors are assured of breathtaking scenery, wildlife and architecture, that captures the unique flavour of this Mediterranean City and its inhabitants. As a VAT free jurisdiction, Gibraltar's popularity with visitors is enhanced by its value added shopping experience in famed Main Street.

Gibraltar has a wide range of activities from rock touring, to sailing, diving, fishing and bird watching bring visitors back again and again.

“Paradise! Total luxury- stunning house, clean and fantastic views”

This house is absolutely beautiful, the furnishing is exceptional. The views over the golf course incredible. The pool was clean, warm and inviting. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and cannot wait to return next year in June 2014. The are electric gates to the property, and its only a shot walk to the club house where you can get fantastic cocktails and food. The golf course is on your doorstep. I also went running around the golf course which was a challenging but enjoyable run.

“Luxury for all the family”

We were 4 adults / 2 families travelling with two young children (Ages 1 and 1.5). Both families knew the area well, having stayed at a selection of hotels and villas. The property was well specced and finished. The owner was very helpful as we required pool fence, stairs gates, cots and high chairs. Local managing agent met us out of hours and was always on hand if we needed anything. Benhavis is very close and offers a great selection of resturants and bars. Please review the top ones from Trip Advisor. We had some awesome meals. I would conclude, that the property offered great VFM, is highly specced, owner / local agent is helpful with a can do atitude, plus Benhavis is great for a night out with a young family.

We were 4 adults travelling with four young children (ages 1-3) and, having stayed at a wide range of property on the Costa over the years, this villa simply exceeded all of our expectations. Beautiful, well maintained property; wonderful, peaceful and secure surrounds whilst being within a an acceptable drive to all the local beaches and amenities. Owner very responsive and accommodating even arranging cots, highchairs, stair gates and pool guard! Local managing agent inducted us to the local surround and couldn't do enough for us during our stay. A very highly spec'ed property with everything you could ever want and more for a brief stay: exceptional value for money we thought. Would highly recommend, have done so already to friends and family and will most definately be staying again!...
