The Murcia region
The Costa Calida region
The Costa Calida region
Murcia is the perfect place to enjoy either an energetic holiday or to relax and unwind away from it all. Or both!
The city after which the region was named was founded in 831 and lies in the middle of the valley through which the River Segura flows. It is a large, bustling, cosmopolitan city with a stunning cathedral at its heart, and a maze of side streets and plazas around it, dotted with cafés, restaurants, tapas bars and independent shops - as well as the bigger designer names.
The region of Murcia has the added attraction of 'two seas', the Mar Menor or Small Sea, and the Mar Mayor (the Mediterranean). The Mediterranean has endless beaches of white sand, cristal clear water, magnificent cliffs, lively ports and picturesque coves. The Mar Menor was originally an open bay but is now a large coastal lake of warm seawater measuring around 170km. Both the Med and the Mar Menor are perfect locations for swimming; fishing sailing: water skiing and scuba diving.
The area has a magnificent climate with over 315 days of sunshine and winter temperatures with an average of 18C. It is famous for the three Championship Golf Courses of La Manga Club, but there are now 12 further courses in the area offering a fabulous opportunity for the keen golfer.
Inland offers conservation areas with a wide range of bird life, the opportunity to go horse riding, cycling, walking, climbing trekking and the chance to savour the rural sights and enjoy peaceful rural accommodation. This area is an historical adventure with cave dwellings and paintings, incredible architecture and plenty of local museums.
There are two airports, San Javier which is situated on the north shore of the Mar Menor and the El Altet airport at Alicante which is approximately 90km north of Murcia. There is a third airport due to open in 2013 which will further open up the region and make flights more frequent and cheaper.
Nestling between the Costa Blanca and Andalucía, the Costa Cálida is one of the least known and most unspoilt areas of Spain - guaranteed to give you a taste of 'real Spain'. With over 315 days of sunshine every year, it is little wonder that they named it the warm coast, and the unspoilt inland waters of the Mar Menor - the largest natural lagoon in Europe - offer safe and warm water for bathing all year round.
Take time to enjoy the lifestyle of the Mar Menor and Costa Calida. There are stretches of unspoilt beaches and bustling bars and restaurants where you can enjoy fantastic seafood, meats, fruits, cheeses, and rice from around the region at very reasonable prices. Not to mention the wines … visit the local bodegas (wine cellars) and get a real taste of Spain.
If you prefer to shop, the metropolitan cities of Murcia and Cartagena and the busy seaside towns of Los Alcazares, Santiago de la Ribera and San Pedro del Pinatar have excellent shopping centres. There are daily markets in the towns and villages throughout the region. One of the largest and best markets of all is the Sunday market at Cabo de Palos: here you will find everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, to leather goods and everything in between.
If you are looking for a more sporting holiday, golf, of course, is key in Murcia, as well as water sports, such as wind surfing, kite surfing and jet skiing. Visit one of the many equestrian centres for a riding lesson through the stunning countryside and along the beaches of the Mediterranean. Less than an hour from the coast, and you can enjoy year-round hill-walking in the Sierra Espuña - with well-marked network of paths for all levels of walker. The region also boasts a network of naturally-heated spas where you can relax and recuperate weary limbs and joints.
Situated beside the tranquil Mar Menor, only 6m above sea level and with a beach which extends 7km the length of the town. The town has a large, buzzing market on a Tuesday morning very close to the newly restored Town Hall or Ayuntamiento.
There are a wide range of facilities available in Los Alcazares, in addition to water sports, an ancient spa which has been recently fully restored. The land around is flat for ideal for horse riding or cycling and exploring the landscape.
Taken from the Arabic word Al Kazar meaning Castle, from the Moorish invasion of the area in the 8th century because of the number of castles and palaces they saw around the area.
The area was originally populated by the Romans who built spas in order to take advantage of the therapeutic properties of the waters of the Mar Menor. Over time it became a custom to take the “Novenarios” or nine baths here.
At the beginning of the 20th century the local people of Murcia began to use the Mar Menor as a holiday resort area. Los Alcazares is half way along the inland coast of the Mar Menor so easily accessible from surrounding villages and towns and it has been a busy bustling fishing port for centuries.
Places and monuments of note include Torre del Rami, an Arab fortress that was later used by the Spanish to keep a look out for any pirates that came into the Mar Menor. The bronze monument on the Espejo (mirror) beach is dedicated to the fishermen, who have provided the main stay of the economy over the past centuries.
Carnival celebrates the end of winter and jointly with San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar is known as the Carnival of the Mar Menor. A fiesta is held in honour of the Virgin del Carmen during the second half of July and on 15th August there is a procession that takes place on both land and sea for the towns patron saint, Virgin de Ascension.
