How to get there

If you have your car on the mainland, I highly recommend bringing it over on the car ferry. This is by far your best option. With a car you are able to get a good look around the whole Island. If you want to rent a car on the Island, you can come over on the passenger ferry and rent a car at the wharf on your arrival. They also rent scooters and bicycles (the bicycles can be hired with a battery because it is so hilly and they feel sorry for you!)

You may prefer not to rent a vehicle and get around by foot or go on different bus tours to see the Island.

As far as arriving on the Island without transport, you have two options:

1. If you come with a light backpack, you can take a bus to Palm Beach, from there you can walk up a steep bush track for about 10 min.

2. If you come with a suitcase, your only option is to take a taxi. I can give you a recommendation for the cheapest taxi.

There are different companies offering tours and day trips to see the Island.

If you want to explore by foot, a 1/2 hour walk takes you to Ostend which has a supermarket, Cafes, gift shops & a buzzing Saturday market.

Allow an hour for a walk to stunningly beautiful Onetangi beach. To get there you can partly walk on a track along the sea side and the other part along the main road. You can drive there in 5 min.

There are 2 walking tracks which take you down to Palm Beach, one going through a bush and the other one down a paddock. On the walk down the paddock you have a beautiful panoramic sea view. It will take you about 10 min. to walk down, but uphill will take you longer unless you are super fit! Down on Palm Beach there is a Dairy which provides the usual necessities, it also offers coffee and ice cream. There is a Restaurant called Arcadia, it also does some takeaways.
