How to get there

By car come into the Lake District from the south via Windermere or North via Penrith. Take the road to Keswick and then the B5289 Borrowdale road for about 8 miles south of Keswick. About half a mile after the village of Rosthwaite, turn right into the lane that is signed to the Youth Hostel - the Farmhouse is about 400m down this lane, over a small bridge and immediately on the right - it is the only house once you cross the bridge and you cannot go any further. Be more relaxed and take the train to Penrith or Windermere and then by bus to Keswick. Change here at the bus station outside Booths supermarket (good place for a meal and use the Wi-Fi if you have time to wait) to get the local bus up the Borrowdale valley. Ask for the stop for the Longthwaite YHA - the house is about 400m from the bus stop.

Getting around

There is a good bus service up and down the valley. The direct bus to Keswick takes about 20 minutes, there is a more scenic route over Honister pass and though Buttermere village. Day saver and family tickets are available. Look at the Stagecoach timetable online. There is also a good ferry that goes round Derwentwater several times daily - you can hop on and off during the day.
