Selinunte takes the name from the Selinon ", which in Latin means wild parsley, a vegetable that grows in great abundance in this area.
Selinunte was an ancient Greek city on the southwest coast of Sicily. A town full of history which at the time had a short life, about 240 years, that's because it was destroyed by the Carthaginians who by subsequent earthquakes.
All the ground forms today an archaeological Park of about 40 hectares (Europe's largest).
In the archaeological site, the Acropolis there are some temples along with other secondary buildings. These temples were rebuilt as many buildings were ruined as a result of earthquakes occurred in the middle ages, however some interventions have helped to almost completely rebuild the so-called Temple of Hera.
The sculptures were found in the ruins of Selinunte are located mainly in the National Archaeological Museum of Palermo, is the exception, the most famous Efebo di Selinunte, which is now on display at the Municipal Museum of Castelvetrano.
How to get to Selinunte: A29 motorway Palermo-Mazara del vallo, exit at Castelvetrano, continue towards Selinunte natural reserve of Belice.
