How to get there

Sanibel is an island, linked to mainland Fort Myers by a scenic Causeway ($6 toll, one direction only). Sanibel is not accessible via public transportation; the only way to get there is by car, taxi, ride-sharing service, limo, or private boat.

The nearest airport is SW Florida International (RSW), Ft Myers, 28 mi./45 mins from our condo. SW Florida is not served by Amtrak; bus service connects Fort Myers with Amtrak stations in Tampa, Orlando and Miami.

Sanibel is about a 4-hour drive from both Orlando (and the Sanford AutoTrain station) and Miami; 2 hours from Tampa, 1 hour from Sarasota. Once you arrive, parking is free at Breakers West.

Getting around

Sanibel has no public transportation; to get around, one must walk, drive, bike or taxi. One of the best ways to see Sanibel is by bicycle, on 25 miles of bike-hike paths. Breakers West is on West Gulf Drive. The Gulf Drives (East, Middle, West) run parallel to and south of the main road, Periwinkle Way. Most restaurants and shops are on Periwinkle. Tarpon Bay Rd is the quickest route to Periwinkle, the main road. The Gulf Drives are a winding, quieter, more scenic alternative. The National Wildlife Refuge, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum and CROW Wildlife Rehab are all on San-Cap Rd, the western extension of Periwinkle, and just north of Breakers West. the historic lighthouse is at the eastern tip of Sanibel.
