How to get there

From San Jose there are several options. The cheapest is the Mepe Public Bus, leaves out of the Caribbean Terminal in Bario Mexico. This will run you about $11. Though not fancy, it is safe and reasonably comfortable... for a bus with no air-conditioning, toilets, or deep reclining seats. You won't share the bus with chickens or goats, but there will be lots of backpackers, ticos and more than one vendor selling plantanos along the way.

There are shared shuttles that leave from the airport daily to Puerto Viejo, or you can stay overnight and they will pick you up from your hotel, I am happy to help you book this with a company I use a lot, cost for the shuttle is about $60. I have a great hotel right by the airport, we give them a lot of our clients so you get a good price in return, I can give you their link once we're connected.

Private taxis are an option, as well. If you hire one at the airport, it will cost between $200 and $250. Be very cautious that the vehicle is in sound order and that the driver is aware you are going to Puerto Viejo de Limon, NOT Puerto Limon de Sarapique. If you think you want a private driver, arrange it with me in advance. We like to support the local fishermen, several of whom own 12-15 passenger vans. The extra room will assure you a comfortable trip over--sleep, stretch out, stop for snacks, etc. They will not charge extra for luggage, and they will pick you up as you exit customs and deliver you straight to our door. The cost is $180, and in my opinion, worth the peace of mind. Besides, they will get you all ready for the Caribbean, so by the time you arrive, not only will you have insider's knowledge, but you'll have a friend in town from one of the oldest families!

For a great adventure, beautiful scenery and a wonderful way to really start your vacation right; why not try the white water/shuttle combo?? They pick you up at your hotel at 6:00 AM, transport you to their base camp, feed you breakfast and securely store your luggage in lockers. Then they drive you to the put-in site, launch you on an amazing river trip full of class II, III, and IV rapids (safe AND fun!), feed you a great lunch riverside mid-day, then you finish at the basecamp, load up and they drop you at your next destination, like my house! This is a great trip and a bargain! $99/pp. I can book it for you so we are sure you get here.

Lastly one of the new regional flights from SJO to Limon. The scenery is amazing! There are limits on weight and luggage, so if you are a heavy packer... you'll pay premium prices. Check out Nature Air or Sansa for information. Note, you’ll need a $22 shuttle to Puerto Viejo/our house, I am happy to help you book this.
