How to get there
The nearest international airports, from which to reach the Aeolian Islands, are: Naples (region of Campania), Palermo (Sicily) and Catania (Sicily).
Naples and Palermo have sea ports which can be easily reached from their respective airports, either by taxi or public bus.
From Catania airport, one must travel to the sea port of Milazzo (143km). The most convenient way to travel between the airport of Catania and Milazzo is by booking a chartered bus ("navetta") which costs around € 25/person/trip and takes around 1 hour 45 min. The chartered buses must be booked prior to travel and be done so online with the travel agency, Eolie Booking.
The Aeolian Islands can be reached twice a week to/from Naples by large ship ("nave"), provided by the company Siremar. The journey by nave is overnight and takes around 15 hours (leaving Naples at around 5pm and arriving to Salina at around 8am, the following day). Passengers can either sleep on-deck (in which case, yoga mat and/or sleeping bag is recommended) or a limited number of private cabins can be booked (with considerable anticipation due to limited availability).
During summer months, daily high-speed hydrofoil ("aliscafo") services are provided by the company SNAV. The aliscafo service leaves from Naples at around 2:30pm in the afternoon and arrives at around 8:30pm in Salina. The aliscafo service is faster than the nave but is usually more expensive as well. Please note, that the aliscafo service usually departs from the port of Naples Mergellina and not the main port of Naples from the nave serice departs (Please check with SNAV).
Between late June and early September, daily aliscafo services are available to/from Palermo and the Aeolian Islands, provided by the company Ustica Lines. The trip takes around 3 hours and 30 min, leaving Palermo shortly after midday. Aliscafo tickets should be booked online prior to travel due to limited availability.
Daily services to/from Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands are available throughout the year. Aliscafo services take around 1 hour and 30 min. Aliscafo services between Milazzo and the islands are provided by Siremar and Ustica Lines. Siremar also provides daily services by nave which can accommodate automobiles as well as passengers.
